Restaurant permanently closed and building demolished, December 2023. We will miss you Chef Kaz!

Especialmente la order 14. El servicio es bien rรกpido y me encanta el sushi. esta muy fresco.
Be the first to ReplyBest Japanese BBQ in LA! Hands down.
If you don't eat beef, you can ask Chef Masa if he can do a seafood based menu. There are other off the menu items that are amazing. For example, the lamb chops and also crab porridge are must orders. The service is great but the ambiance is very old and dark. You will need to know someone to introduce you to get a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyTotoraku is one of those restaurant that has its own level
Totoraku is one of those restaurant that has its own level or status as we can say. Kaz san is not only a chef but just really an artist in every aspect. It's really interesting to see his take on everything in life from food to wine to golf. Its not really luxury lifestyle but let's say its more of a developed sense and taste in life. Its very refined and organized, clean yet delicate. He has this special touch in life or talking, or even as he expresses the sensualness coming from the wine or sake.At the same time the restaurant is very comforting and almost like everyday yakiniku barbeque. In not anyways I felt this was some special luxury restaurant or eating the dining experience of life or the most amazing meal. It was just great, casual and comforting meal that can be spent for great time with friends with couple drinks of fine wine and sake. The food in general was not in anyways anything special, but again it was greatly executed. Everything hits the notes and at the end of the night, Its a well executed meal with nothing lacking to be honest. Only thing I would say that was bit extra ordinary was the pricing but really its experience of its own class. Its just two tables and Chef Kaz only focuses on that two table and making sure the journey is nothing but perfect simple yakiniku experience. I would definitely return here again and I wrote this review, because I read review before going from invitation from my friend whom is a friend with Kaz. It was great night out and lovely place to open special occasion wine and sake to share with friends.

Unless you know Kaz and get a personal invite, forget it don't even try. This is perhaps one of the best meat restaurant in the US.

We got invited to totoraku. It's the kind of "if you know, you know" kinda place. If you're not in the restaurant game and you're used to eating at places like the Cheesecake Factory (no offense) you shouldn't be allowed in here. Also, you're not allowed to take photos. So guess what? Sorry not sorry. I had to remember this.First, this place is invite only. The chef has to invite you otherwise you're not going. It also looks like crap from the outside, making it even better. An unassuming terriyaki house with the wrong phone number listed outside- across the street from McDonald's. Enter and it's a NYC restaurant kinda vibe. Small space and empty wine bottles everywhere since it's customary to bring wine for the chef. The chef is cool as F btw. He will come chat and drink with you while food is cooking and if he likes your guest, they get a card too. Which means they're welcome back anytime. So the food- if you're on a protein diet you won't be mad here. So much meat is brought out for you and the flavors are seriously one of a kind. Not only was everything they brought out well thought out and in perfect sequence, but literally every bite was an "OMG" moment. Just when we were full, and then fuller, and then stuffed, the courses kept coming! It was endless! Almost to the point of like okay when is this meal going to end, we're exploding and we will keep eating anyway because "OMG". I'll just say this was one memorable dining experience. If you have the opportunity to go here (and most people don't)- jump on it. You won't regret it :)

IF you call you get a reservation, and if you are willing to pay whatever price of the day and how much they think you can afford to pay, its always a seat for you, WAY TOO EXPENSIVE AND the guy drinks 1/2 of your wines.

Feasting at Totoraku is a one-of-a-kind experience, but it's is close-knit network- you must be invited. If you are, you come here, in the same manner, you would to a friend of a friend's house, to get together while eating delicious food with excellent wine ;) ย that is the driving factor - ย the experience. Chef Kaz has such a kind heart; you just want to hug him! Otherwise, pass. There's a reason it's not open to the public. The whole course was incredibly delicious! Chef Kaz's comes out and enjoys a glass with the party. He keeps a collection of wine bottles people have brought, it's interesting to see. My favorite part is the wine; getting to bring your favorite bottle of wine to share; a miniature wine tasting party with top-notch meat with some of your favorite people...doesn't get much better than that! However, you could totally be unimpressed and hate it, especially after the bill comes.

I came to Totoraku with 7 other coworkers for a holiday meal. One or two of my coworkers is friends with the Chef, so we were able to get in, but I've heard it's very difficult to eat here / you have to know the chef personally. This restaurant is in a nondescript store, and the furnishings and environment are very sparse. Photos weren't allowed so I respected that and didn't snap any pics. The entire dinner is BYO and we brought 9 bottles of wine which we polished off with the help of the chef and the servers. The meal started with a plate of appetizer samplers, which was very interesting: I loved trying all the tiny tastes. Some were really good and left me wanting more. Then the meat starter: beef tongue, cheek, beef everything - mostly raw at first, but then they bring out a grill and teach you to grill the meat at the table (with recommended times on each side). It reminded me of hot pot - basically, after that part, the customers cooked their own food. I do think the chef does an amazing job sourcing the meat. However there's no menus and definitely no seconds. At the end, my coworker somehow managed to get us lamb chops. Every piece of meat was amazing, but I think the beef tongue was by far the best and most memorable. We ended with ice cream for dessert. The servers and chef are very nice and participate in the drinking, and they're really fun and great people. Overall I met 3 amazing people and had a great time with my coworkers! And will never forget how good beef tongue tastes!
Be the first to ReplyFrom time to time, I got some messages asking me how to get
From time to time, I got some messages asking me how to get into The Teriyaki House Pico, aka Totoraku for dinner. Honestly, I still don't fully know how to get in here to eat by myself. For me I don't have the chef's business card, I don't have the secret phone number, I don't have the restaurant invitation, I don't have whatever. All I have is a friend that is willing to treat me to eat there as long as I bring along some wine, particularly cabernet, and specifically "Screaming Eagle".I told my friend and said we had mostly cab on our last visit at Totoraku, how about we skip the eagle and I'll bring some pinot since I think they match better with the light beef marination, what about Vosne Romanee wine? a couple bottles from Richebourg and maybe a bottle from Cros Parantoux vinyard? The answer I got was "maybe next time then"....sensing my friend is backing out, I quickly confirm to bring the Screaming Eagle, and together with some other Cali cult wine, once again I am heading to LA most exclusive restaurant.Once I was seated, I laid out all the wine on the table and popped 2 bottles of Hundred Acre to warm up our taste bud. When the grill was brought to the table, our taste bud are all ready and I quickly grill a few pcs of beef tongue to start pairing with the eagle. A variety of meat like boneless short ribs, ribeye, tenderloin, lamb chop, etc were served next and we had the Abacus and Scarecrow to finish them off.Since I was seated at the table towards the end of the restaurant, each patron have to walk pass my table if they need to go to the restroom. A patron walk by and said "Wow Screaming Eagle, nice wine", and I reply "Sure it is". Few moments later a 2nd patron passed by and said "What vintage is your Eagle?". I smile and said "2009, still young as a baby". A few more moments later a 3rd patron pass by and said "I wish I am in your party drinking the eagle". I was curious and ask "Do you really mean it? Would you let me dine with you if I brought over a bottle of Screaming Eagle?". 3rd patron said of course and at that moment I think I crack the secret on how to come here to eat, the answer is Screaming Eagle. If I walk into the restaurant with a bottle of Screaming Eagle and ask who want to share, based on what I saw tonight, one of the patron at the restaurant will let me join their table and eat here, that way I don't need invitation, business card or keep asking others how to get in. BUT....use the eagle at your own risk, Burgs lover like myself will certainly decline the request.Click Useful if you think Screaming Eagle will get you a seat at Totoraku.Click Funny if you are a Burgs lover, only DRC or HJ can do the trick.Click Cool if you think having a California Cult wine night at Totoraku is a cool thing to do.
