Tzuco Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
My 19 year old made reservations for my bday and we were
My 19 year old made reservations for my bday and we were running more than 10 mins late . We showed up 20 mins later only to be informed our table was given away. We were so disappointed and had my mom and aunt in tow .... My 75 year old aunt got so upset and asked if they could accommodate us and finally the manager came out and got us a high top table with 2 additional seats for 6 people. We squeezed In and ordered a whole bunch of food including the red snapper on the menu. The service was good , the menu lacks chicken dishes and the drinks were meh. I have had better old fashioned. . Lauren the manager came up and checked on us a few times which was good. I hope chef Carlos will increase the poultry options and also improve the drinks . The guava pavlova was superb!! I will be back with my girlfriends
Wow!! Met a friend here for dinner and he and I both
Wow!! Met a friend here for dinner and he and I both ordered the same. COSTILLAS DE RES and it was incredible!! Our server introduced himself and first question was are there food allergies. Bravo!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As an allergy sufferer (epipen carrier), I am always so impressed. He is allergic to fish and I tree nuts, sesame & beans. He pointed out what to avoid or can easily be modified. Our dinners were served on beans, mine was not. The tortillas were hot and fresh!! I had 3!! Served with minced onion and cilantro and a green sauce. The meat was so good! I usually don't take doggie bag, but let me tell you... the portion was huge and I was not wasting any part of it! I loved every juicy and flavorful bite! No appetizers or desserts. The place is not something you'd walk by outside and be wowed, but the interior is so awesome and architecturally appealing. It's a little loud, but not too dark inside. And as an older generation gal, I value lights, lol. I'll definitely return with friends. TIP: Make reservations and try to do it as soon as you have a time. The place was PACKED!! Not a seat in the place. The only thing that was insane was there is literally only 1 toilet for women. As the ladies stood there in a line, we could not believe it. Literally stupid and not expected for such a large establishment. So, beware. A confusing head-slapper.

High end Mexican food made by a talented chef with excellent service. A bit on the expensive side but an excellent culinary experience. Definitely reserve in advance as it is a top restaurant
I've said this so many times but I wish yelp did 0.
5 stars because I'd give them a 3.5/5. My friends and I ordered the short rib, guacamole with pork, octopus, fries, and a chocolate hazelnut dessert and 2 non-alcoholic drinks. Starting with the star dish- the short rib. It literally fell off the bone and melted in your mouth. My next favorite was the octopus which was tender in the thicker part but tasted kind of burnt when you reached the end. The little carrot, pea, potato salad it's served with was not my cup of tea. The guacamole and fries were very mediocre, you can definitely find better elsewhere. Did you know they also charge $5 for a side of garlic aioli??? Insane. The dessert was also just ok- I found the texture of the hazelnut cake to be a bit dry. Overall, it was a pleasant dining experience and more for special occasions than an everyday casual dinner. Don't forget to check out their super aesthetic bathroom.

Wow. I can't say enough about this place. It's been on my list for a while now and I kept skipping it over. My biggest regret is that I waited this long to try it. Every item was spot on and service and ambience are absolutely WOW. Highly recommend!!
Great place in River North to enjoy shareable Latin meals.
Lots of delicious flavors and options. Also a lot of different types of foods to choose from. Definitely a great place for you and a few friends for drinks and dinner, or a date. The vibe is fun and trendy. We ordered quite a bit of shareable plates and they were all quite filling and had great portion sizes! It was all shareable, and enough to feed at least 2 per plate. Their margaritas were also phenomenal. Get their house margarita and eat your way through dinner. The service was also great. Our server was attentive and helpful. I loved coming here.
Service and ambiance were great! Food was mediocre.
The guacamole and tetela were good. The octopus was chewy and fishy. The tuna ceviche was warm. The pork was flavorless.
This restaurant was top tier.
Definitely one of my favorite places I've been in Chicago. The flavors of the mussels and the octopus were out of this world. Every dish we tried we kept saying omg! Everything was seasoned and flavored perfectly. There was nothing I would change. You won't find dishes similar to this elsewhere. The restaurant itself was a really cool aesthetic. It's a different experience than other places in river north!! If you have guests in town you want to impress, or a date you want to impress- take them here. Our servers were awesome, attentive and kind, and they cleared the tables and refilled waters so quickly. I love it here.
Really enjoyed our experience here.
Beautiful ambience, top notch service, fantastic food and drinks. The food was excellent but highlights from dinner were the guacamole, cochinita pibil, salmon maya, the drinks (the tea was phenomenal) and the seasonal snow man dessert is a must. Definitely would recommend and return here.
I've been here twice and got the lamb barbacoa both times
I've been here twice and got the lamb barbacoa both times because it is just so good. Great service, beautiful space.
Delicious food and gracious service
The food was a real showstopper. Standouts were the pulpo, the shortribs, the burgers and the mussels, which came with fabulous sour dough with which you sop up the broth. The mussels had bits of chorizo in them, and it made a lovely contrast. The service was very good-friendly, but not overboard. Yes, it’s expensive, but worth every penny.
Not good
We went here for lunch at Tzuco. It was not good. The place is nice (probably beautiful in summer when the outdoor area is open) and the service was great. However, the food was bad. We ordered steak tarter to begin with. It was bizarre. It was served like tuna tarter in a mold shape with avocado on the bottom. If you had did a blind taste, you would not know it was raw steak or even steak. The steak was mixed with some overpowering sauce and the texture was gelatinous. The egg on top was weird. Looked like it was partially cooked (could see solid white). This appetizer was split between 2 of us and we did not finish. Both of us selected Carne Asada for our main course. Meat was tough (it was not marinated for very ling and wasn’t properly salted before cooking) and again covered with an overpowering sauce. Overall very disappointing. The previous week I had eaten at a well known Oaxaca restaurant in Uptown called Kie-Gol-Lanee (mentioned in NYT 36 hours in Chicago). This is not a fancy restaurant but their Carne Asada was excellent. Meat had been marinated for many hours. Beautiful juicy and tender. We didn’t stay for desert or coffee. Legged it to somewhere we like – Vanille in Lincoln Park. Our downtown spots are usually RL or Le Colonial. I could not recommend Tzuco.
Another outstanding meal
Having visited Tzuco previously, I was looking forward to dinner here with family. I was not disappointed. In fact, my second visit here exceeded my expectations by a large margin. The ambiance is contemporary with a Latin flair. It is chic without being "over the top." The staff and service are impeccable. Highly trained, polite and very attentive, the wait staff never got in the way of conversation even on a busy holiday night. Everything on the menu is outstanding. However, one dish stands out as my favorite, pulpo (charred octopus). Not every restaurant can prepare this dish so delectably but Tzuco does it beautifully. We had skate wing, mushrooms, yellowtail ceviche, red snapper, broccolini and dessert. Every dish was seasoned perfectly and I do mean perfectly. No one even considered asking for salt or pepper shakers. And, they had my favorite tequila, Herradurra Ultra. Smooth and tasty on the rocks it was the perfect complement to the meal. I highly recommend Tzuco to anyone visiting Chicago. It is simply my favorite restaurant in the City.
Check if you've accidentally booked on a day with only a special menu available
We made a booking online some weeks in advance, but nobody and nothing told us that the day we had chosen was the day they were celebrating the Day of the Dead. This meant that the normal a-la-carte menu was unavailable only a rather expensive fixed menu. It's a pity that none of the numerous texts and emails that they sent us confirming our booking said anythign about this. We made our excuses and left.
Good, but…
Friends and I went here for dinner based on a recommendation in Eater Chicago. All three of us had landed earlier that day from different places, so by that night were really hungry. Once we arrived, we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is distinct. It was dimly lit, and felt like were in a museum with all the artifacts used to decorate the interior. It was neat. We eventually ordered and tried the following: - Pulpo Enamorado - Very good. I remember having a good octopus dish once before a number of years ago. This preparation was even better. Really enjoyed the flavours. - Steak Tartare - Very good. Again, great flavour. - Barbacoa - Good. Super tender, but not as much flavour as I would have expected. But the jocoque and pickled vegetables helped enhance it. - Tzuco Burger - Good. Messy, but great tasting burger. Fries were great too. - Costillas de Rez - Good. Also super tender, but lacked a bit of flavour too. Service was generally friendly, although the couple times we needed something it too awhile to find someone available. I should note that the three of us believe we had a form of food poisoning that night, as we all experienced digestive issues the following morning. Considering we did not share any other meals, the reasonable conclusion is that it was something we shared while at Tzuco. Nonetheless, we still enjoyed our meal. The incident didn’t drastically take away from the dining experience
High Quality Meal with a Couple Disappointments
Overall we had a very good experience with a few disappointments. We ordered two starters and one main although I was disappointed that there were only five mains on the menu (less than on the online menu) and the only vegetarian main was sold out by seven o'clock when we arrived. The beets starter was excellent because of the sweet/hot glaze that came on it. The Tlacoyo starter was bland in comparison but well made. I had the skate main which came with a cold lentil cake. The sauce for the fish was creamy, spicy and delicious and the cold lentils had a subtle but very nice flavor. The service was fine. The dining room was pretty noisy, even where we sat by the door. The decor is pretty interesting.
A mixed review of love and blah
I was really looking forward to menu and trying some different things from the choices. When I arrived, the young front desk staff was confused and I had to nudge them after waiting for 15 minutes of frivolous waiting as clearly they were not going to take the initiative to issue a table. While I waited for my reservation, I admired the decor, and the vibe of the place. I really enjoyed the idea, the decor, the lighting of the place and my time spent there. Once seated, the server was prompt, and precise. For apps, I tried the guacamole and tetela. The tetela was very nice. The guac, was fresh, but just ok, nothing inspiring. I firmly bellieve that if the guac is good, the dinner will follow. For dinner I tried the barbocoa, and the tzuco burger. Cannot say enough about the burger, although I felt bad ordering this since, I should have ordered something more bold. The burger did not disappoint, i felt as if the burger was practically the desert....highly recommend. For the barbocoa, i was not a fan..sure it was 'fall off the bone' cooked to perfection, however, i felt the meat was bland, and no matter what I added to my barbocoa taco, i could not get much flavor and was ultimately disappointed. I was quickly reminded of how much I despise pickled anything. I regret that I did get the cochinita pibil instead. Based on my first visit, I am unsure if I would return to this spot solely on the food, but certainly on atmosphere and vibe.
good but pricey
Tasty and innovative Mexican food. Cool crowd. But like almost every eating experience in the US these days, the prices are getting out of control. Our waitress told us that the portions were on the small side and we needed one dish each per course. Glad we didn't listen. "Small portions'' means something different in the Midwest than in Europe. You can easily share to save money.
Can’t wait to return
I’ve lived downtown for 18 years and this was one of the top 25 meals I’ve had in the city. Can’t wait to go back. The Mexican Negroni was exceptional.
Great to experience
Amazing place with great atmosphere, the dishes was something incredible, the barbacoa which melted like butter, and the ribs OMG, even we meet the chef Carlos great guy so talented. Im a Mexican so tell you all this place is way beyond of the Mexican food but keeping the traditional touches. 👏🏻
