Highly recommend this one!
We pretty much ordered everything on the menu and every bite was fabulous! We chose to dine "family style" and particularly loved the biscuits, the gumbo, the short ribs, and all the sides (mac and cheese, cornbread - yum!). We saved a little room for dessert and particularly loved the peach cobbler. Our server Matthew was wonderful as was the ambiance and overall attention to detail. One of the best meals we have EVER had.

I was sitting at the bar with a very good friend and colleague from work tonight. We both had two drinks and dinner. Then another colleague texted and asked to join us... we were both excited to see her and couldn't wait for her to arrive. When our 3rd friend arrived, the front desk told her that she could sit at the bar so she came over to join us. I asked to order another drink because I was going to stay and chat with my friend who just arrived...the bartender who had been pretty responsive didn't respond...Then he returned with a manager who said that I couldnโt order another drink and in fact my friend and I had to get up and leave. We couldnโt stay, we couldnโt order more drinks and chat with our 3rd friend who just arrived. Apparently they have a 90 minute time limit that no one knew about except the people who worked there. I looked at the website, my friends looked at the website, and I even called a friend who had initially introduced me to the restaurant and she looked at the websiteโฆwe couldnโt find the rule anywhere. We asked several customers already sitting at the barโฆthey said they were frequent customers and were never told that nor had they ever heard about that. All of us asked the hostesses at the front door and both ladies said yes, your 90 minutes is up and not only that, our third friend who just arrived was told by the ladies that she only had 40 minutes left and she hadnโt even ordered dinner yet! I have been to Virtue multiple times, and Iโve told numerous people about Virtueโฆitโs a black owned restaurant which I think is important to support, itโs on my way home from work and the food is decent. Also at my last visit, I spent over $400 because I paid for my friendsโ mealโฆ.but I was told to leave this night. My boyfriend and I visited previously and he spent over $200. The most important factor I think that affects the quality of the restaurant is how youโre treated once youโre there. Thatโs at the top of my list and will make or break an establishment in my book. I would rather dine at a restaurant where I can spend quality time with friends without being put on a timer. The bartender, after telling me to leave, even recommended a different restaurant apparently with the same owner that I could visitโฆWhy would I go to a different restaurant when my friend was at Virtue? Why would I go to any restaurant owned, operated by the same people after the stressful experience I had at Virtue? Well, I plan to let my other friends know about this & post my review on all of my social media sites and other restaurant review sites. Iโm also going to just mention in case people didnโt knowโฆthis restaurant doesnโt allow you to just order food to take out and there is an additional charge on your bill to pay for the staffโs health insurance. I have been to many, many beautiful restaurants in my day and I have never been charged for the staffโs insuranceโฆunless itโs hidden in the bill and I just donโt know aboutโฆbut never have I seen a charge that requires customers to take on part of the responsibility that should solely belong to the owner.

Every moment of our visit was delightful. Service was excellent, atmosphere on a Sunday evening was electric. The food was wonderful and Iโll remember it for a long time. If you plan a trip to Chicago, make a plan to stop in for a meal - I canโt imagine anyone who lives food being disappointed.

This was the first time dining at Virtue. Table was directly in front of the chefs cooking area. It was amazing to see Chef Damarr operating in the sane mild and focused manner as he exhibited while competing on Top Chef. It was equally great to watch the very organized operation of the waitstaff. My server Anthony was very attentive although it was extremely busy. We ordered Gumbo. Red Snapper with Lima Beans & Okra, Cornbread, Mac n Cheese and Banana Pudding for dessert. The food was good however the Mac n Cheese and Banana Pudding were really good. I gave 4 stars for atmosphere as it was crowded, therefore loud and my table was so close to the next table.

Virtue has a cozy, vibrant vibe. The staff was welcoming and attentive. We got small and large rations and shared family style. We found this the be the best way to sample as many dishes as possible. Got gumbo, fried green tomatoes, biscuits, shrimp and grits, mac and cheese, and cherry crumble cake. Everything was exceptional! For us, the gumbo and the mac and cheese were the standouts. Best weโve ever had! This is a canโt miss!!

Be the first to ReplyOverrated and overpriced
For this restaurant to be a Michelin star... Itโs overpriced & overrated. 6/2/23 Chicken wings wasnโt seasoned, and abit undercooked. Biscuits were hard. Pimento cheese was clumpy and the crackers shouldโve been better, not regular saltine. Catfish sliders were decent and the gizzards were tender. The inconsistent and not hospitable bartenders need training. One didnโt refresh my glass nor poured my drink into it. The other lady had an attitude. It took a long time to remove plates. I was overcharged, so check your bill. Happy hour is only honored at the bar.

Be the first to ReplyPhenomenal
The entire experience was phenomenal. We sat at the bar because at 4 pm the restaurant was booked. Our female waitress was very friendly and accommodating as was the entire staff. Very nice ambiance. But let's talk about the food... We wanted to try everything so we ordered grits, cornbread, Mac n cheese and the lemon, fennel chicken. The portions, even for two people, were huge. I had to stop myself. We loved everything, but the Mac n cheese. It sounds crazy, but it was too rich and cheesy. My favorite was the chicken. It was moist, smooth and very flavorful. When I thought we had enough, my husband ordered the banana pudding. Believe me. I found room for it. It was AMAZING! The prices were extremely reasonable. We will make the 2 hour drive to dine here sometime soon.

I was there last evening, November 10, 2022. I ordered the fried gizzards with wild rice. The rice was excellent, however the gizzards were too salty. I sent them back after being urged by the server as I know chefs donโt prefer this action. Much to her credit when the food arrived again she asked me to taste. I said if itโs not satisfactory I wouldnโt send it back a second time so I bagged and left. Upon arrival home, I noted the only thing they did was remove the batter which I thought was in excess anyway, reheated probably with the same rice and sent back to me. I didnโt consume the food at all. I knew they had simply removed the batter based on size of gizzards which I took a picture of and the lack of batter. You can compare their advertisement if this fish to my final order, if you choose. They serve a lot of food and make a lot of money so Iโm insulted that they would think I didnโt notice this action. This is why I hate sending food back. I understand as a previous small restaurant business owner. But this is unacceptable. Itโs very dark/dim lighting there so one would really not notice details unless theyโre under real lighting. I found it interesting that once the batter was removed, the gizzards are actually very small. Decide for yourselves. I remain unhappy and saddened by this.
Be the first to ReplyJames Beard 4 a Reason! Chicago MUST DINE!
From the Front of the House to the Back=10's across the board!!!! IF we could rate 10, we would! There is a reason they've won the James Beard Award, ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! The Hosts are welcoming, warm, efficient and take initiative in this high trafficked "IT" spot. They really try to make sure your party has a solution if there are no Reservations made, which are HIGHLY recommended! Our Server Maria deserved the 50% Tip (not bragging, they really deserved it) and her team of colleagues, who kept our dining experience flowing! Street parking but there's a lot up the block, which, for $12, we had a 4 hour window. The signature cocktails are very well made. We really enjoyed the Justified. Now onto the MAIN ATTRACTION, the INCREDIBLE FOOD: Small Rations included the Cornmeal Fried Green Tomatoes with Shrimp & Remoulade sauce on the sauce, as one party member is allergic to shellfish. It was great. The shrimp were fresh, tasted like Gulf shrimp, plump and sweet. The remoulade reminded you of homemade tarter. Good regardless! We also had the Gumbo. My family roots are from Creole & Gullah Geechee Country itself, NOLA and South Cack & even I had to admit, it was better than mine! Took the side of shrimp from the fried Green Tomatoes and added, to make my own Chicken & Shrimp Gumbo & it was PHENOMENAL, PHENOMENAL, PHENOMENAL! Big Rations: Short Ribs over creamed Spinach & mashed potatoes and a Sherry-type au jus. This dish is beyond your wildest dreams! We also had the Blackened Catfish with Roasted Carrots and some type of Turmeric-ish sauce, equally divine. When they say Pot Likker, best believe they know what they're talking about! Savory, tender Collards with smoke turkey and sweet onions to support its deliciousness. The Mac & Cheese done right, is absolutely done right! It comes served in a wide ramekin smothered in a medley of sharp Cheeses, including Cheddar. HAD TO get an order to go. They put you in a food coma with their desserts. We had the Banana Pudding with fresh Cool Whip. (We weren't gonna get it because we thought it came with the canned cool whip, which is a negative in our book.) We had Summertime-in-a-bowl Peach Cobbler topped w a homemade puff pastry-like light Cornbread-esque and a tablespoon of Vanilla ice cream, which is needed. THIS is THE dessert that is a MUST! Better than Grandma's! Overall, a destination, a must and one of THE BEST dining experiences EVER!

I read about this restaurant in the Hyde Park area of Chicago and I had to try it out. It is amazing! From the cocktails to the appetizers - Fried Green Tomatoes, dinner - Blackened Cat Fish - Yummy and very unique! Unfortunately, I did not save room for dessert.

An outstanding evening. Excellent food, service and atmosphere. I requested for Chef de Cuisine Damarr Brown to come by our table so that we could thank him for his wonderful food. He did and was so kind. Thank you to the staff of Virtue for an excellent night out.
Be the first to ReplyThank you Taylor, for excellent service!
Taylor was a great server and she really explained the menu well. Make sure to try the gumbo as it is absolutely delicious. We also loved the green tomato and shrimp remoulade, the short rib, and the creamy shrimp and grits.

We were totally blown away by the food. It is an exciting and unusual menu, so do yourself a favour and make sure you get advice from your server about what to order! We had several courses: and everything from the green tomatoes to the short ribs, to the banana pudding was delicious! Each dish was imaginative, nicely plated and tasted sensational! Definitely worth a visit.

After reading that Chef had won a major Beard Award, we decided to try. Plus, my wife and I live Southern food. The restaurant was in touch with us several times about our seating request. As soon as we walked in there was a friendly and lively vibe. Nice drink menu. We shared gumbo (they split for us in kitchen) and fried green tomatoes (with a shrimp and Romulade sauce on each . Both dishes had plenty of gusto without being overwhelming. We also shared the short rib which was plenty big for two. Had both โspecialโdishes: made-to-order mac&cheese and cornbread. Too full for dessert, so took banana pudding and chocolate cake home. The pudding was outstanding; rich and creamy. The cake awaits. Prices were very reasonable and the waiter couldnโt have been more friendly, helpful or efficient. They add a small surcharge (3.5%) to cover health insurance for staff. A great idea, I think. Friendly, efficient, reasonable with outstanding food=5 stars.
Be the first to ReplyDon't Miss Virtue
I've lived in Chicago my entire life and have had my fair share of excellent food at restaurants like Alinia and Roiser. But I have never, EVER, had the kind of experience that Virtue offers. Entering the restaurant is like going to the home of a close friend. The hostesses greeted us with a smile, ensured us that our table would be ready on time then personally escorted us to the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. Little touches like this previewed the amazing things to come. Our server answered every question we had about each entree in detail. She clearly knew what was in each dish, down to a shellfish base in an appetizer. And she was an exceptional person on top of it all. Kind, attentive without being obtrusive, and always with.a smile in her voice. The food? Lord above there wasn't a bad choice on our entire table. Gumbo was superior to any we've had, including in New Orleans. The fried green tomatoes are topped with a shrimp remoulade and could easily be a light meal. They were crunchy on the outside and tender-crisp on the inside. Biscuits were tender, Greens and pot likker were peppery and texturally pleasing. Don't miss the decadent cornbread and mac and cheese. Both were beyond delicious. We had the short ribs, catfish, and mushroom entree and each bite was like a party on the tongue. We ended the meal with some of the best vanilla puddin' I've ever sampled. The open kitchen allowed us to see the professionalism the chefs put into every dish. The owner ran the orders with a practised pace, never loud and demeaning but always with authority and attention to detail. He stopped by our table and after asking if we enjoyed our meal, asked "did you feel comfortable in our restaurant?" Yes, Chef. Like I was dining in the home of an old friend. Michelan should take a closer look here.

This is a tough establishment to get into, and after our dinner, it is clear why. Reservations were booked out during our entire stay except for a โtoo late for usโ time on one evening, so we opted to roll the dice for a โBlue Haired Specialโ at 4:30 on a Saturday. We were seated at the bar, (only option), and at that time of day, this was fine and comfortable. The food was beyond outstanding. We opted to share small plates: Gumbo, Green tomatoes, Collard greens, and Gizzards. The portions were perfect for two, and the taste was full on Southern Love. Staff was efficient, attentive, and courteous. Make plans to visit Virtue. Chef and staff are doing amazing things.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional Dining Option in Chicago
Usually, I post reviews only on hotels, but every rare once in a while, a restaurant (or an attraction) is so exceptional that I feel compelled to share the news. Last night, my partner and I dined at Virtue in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. And the experience was memorable. We received the best service, from the time we entered, throughout dinner, and upon departing, that we have received anywhere since COVID hit in early 2020. And the food was delectable. Although the menu reads a little on the simple side, the food is complex and thoughtfully prepared. We ordered the liver pate and gumbo appetizers, the short rib and catfish entrees, the cornbread side, and, to go, the red velvet cake. Every single item was in its own way exceptional. Finally, Virtue's prices are hard to beat. It is rare these days to find such elevated cuisine come with per item entree cost in the $20s. Finally, the neighborhood is great -- despite living in Chicago for quite some time, I think it's a secret to some that Hyde Park is as buzzing and trendy as any neighborhood in the City.

My family has been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for a long time. Finally had a free Sunday night and was able to get reservations. We were extremely pleased with the entire experience. First the service was personable, helpful and well-paced. Answered all of our questions concerning the food and made spot-on recommendations. Decanted our wine, which we brought, immediately. (Note: the corkage fee was $35 for one 750 ml bottle). I try never to bring a wine which a restaurant has on their wine list and I learned that Virtue simply appreciates if you do not bring the same vintage. Second, the food was outrageous. We started with the biscuits and then shared the gumbo which is among the best we have eaten in anywhere. For entrees we had the catfish, the short rib and the lamb t-bone with the cornbread and mac and cheese sides. All were excellent. My wife commented that her catfish was superb. My son loved the short rib. The desserts were the red velvet cake and the lemon pound cake. Again, the desserts did not disappoint in any way. A highlight was the Chef coming to the table a speaking with us for a few minutes. This made us feel welcome and added to our enjoyment. We found the service food and ambience to be a value because of its quality. Will definitely return in a few weeks even though we have to travel over an hour to get there. This is one of the best restaurants in Chicago and deserves any accolade it receives. This restaurant deserves a Michelin star.

This is the very best dinner restaurant we visited during our stay in Chicago! The service was quick, informed, and friendly. We had the beef short ribs, which were tender, thick, and full of flavor. It was served with creamed spinach, masked potatoes, and gravy. We also had their lamb t-bone, served with asparagus, sorghum grain, and chermoula. We also had their cornbread with honey butter. Absolutely everything was perfectly prepared, prefectly seasoned, and very well presented. The mixed drinks were also expertly prepared. We shall visit this restaurant again the next time we are in Chicago.
Be the first to ReplyImpeccable service, excellent food!
I had been looking forward to dining at Virtue since seeing the segment on CBS Saturday a few months ago. It exceeded my high expectations!
It was an exceptional dining experience. I had the catfish, which was delicious. My dining companion had the short ribs, which she declared outstanding. The cornbread was also very tasty - it had just the right amount of sweetness, not too much.
When the gentleman clearing our table asked about the collard greens that my companion didnโt eat, she told him they were just a bit too peppery for her. Imagine our surprise when a few minutes later - after we had paid our bill (the collards had been removed) - a different gentleman stopped at our table with another order of greens for her to try (along with a to-go container). He said her feedback had been shared with the kitchen, they had made an adjustment, and they wanted her to try another version. She did and said it was definitely less peppery.
I have never experienced that level of customer care - not just customer service - at any restaurant. When I think about the number of things that had to occur for that to happen, itโs quite remarkable. First the gentleman clearing our table had to ask about the uneaten dish, then he had to relay the feedback to the kitchen, which had to care enough to reassess the dish; then someone had to decide to try a do-over and present it to the customer. Incredible. I will patronize this restaurant every time Iโm in Chicago and recommend it to everyone I know who is visiting Chicago.
Dinning in a great place
Excellent place for food and service, service was great from walking in the door.
Food is outstanding, There is definitely a great taste to all menu items
Reimagined Soul Food!
We saw this restaurant featured on a local program and immediately put it on our list. Itโs a cozy causal atmosphere with a wonderful staff. The menu was not overwhelming and our server Taylor helped in paring our entree with the perfect wine. The food was absolutely delicious. This place is definitely an upscale version and reimagined version of classic soul food dishes! Well done Virtue!
