Yum! Never had Ethiopian before this place, but it's so
Yum! Never had Ethiopian before this place, but it's so delicious. we shared a sampler platter, and everything was yummy...different from your standard fare. Love the food and the restaurant is very cute and down home. I always take my out of town travelers here for a taste of traditional Ethiopian fare.

Wow so good!! This was my first time trying Ethiopian food and really enjoyed it - got the vegetable sampler and the lamb for two, and the portions were super generous. The flavors were great, really enjoyed this! Currently it's takeout only but when we got there it only took about 15 after our order for food to be ready. Super yummy!

This was my first time having Ethiopian food and Walia was a delicious introduction. The bread was perfect and all of the sides that came with it was the best compliment. The only criticism I have here is the location. It's in a rundown lot that doesn't seem the safest and would be the biggest reason I would be hesitant to come back. That said- great food, great prices.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food! I would revisit the place.

Be the first to ReplyFirst time eating Ethiopian food and it was delicious.
Grilled chicken tibs and the veggie sampler was great - and the gluten free injera (necessary for celiac disease) made the whole meal feel easy. We'll order again.

Not sure I would eat a lot of this kind of food but occasionally it should work.

I am moving here from VA and I am quite interested in finding some Ethiopian that stands up to the lovely variety from the DMV area. Unfortunately this place isn't it.Although I give credit for the portion sizing of the mains, I'm generally underwhelmed; the cuisine has the potential for incredibly complex and well spiced dishes but this? Quite frankly a lot of it tasted rather watered down and lacking in flavor (especially the red/yellow split peas). The collard greens and cabbage were fine, but felt a bit under-seasoned. There was one vegetarian dish I wasn't familiar with (between cabbage and yellow split pea) but the taste was rather off-putting and bland. The salad was pretty basic (no tomatoes?) and there wasn't nearly enough injera for a combo for two people (it worked out for our hunger level, but generally this would be disappointing). The lamb was just...there. Although there was a good portion of it, it wasn't as spiced as it could have been.Generally service was fine; had a QR code payment method connecting to Toast for easy service. But the main course just didn't hold up.Due to proximity I may be back if I'm desperate for an Ethiopian fix, but I'm inclined to look elsewhere. It's a good starter spot if you've not had Ethiopian before, but that's all it is for me.

3.5 STARSUgly deliciousness.Ethiopian food may not look aesthetically pleasing to some but I LOVE it! I mean, how many of you have been disappointed by "made for the 'gram" overpriced, novelty food items?!Unless I'm going to fart rainbows, I just care about the taste. What Ethiopian food may lack in appearance, makes up in taste...the BOLD, in your face spices and heat are what I crave, along with the distinct sourness of the spongey injera to sop up everything.Hard to find bone-in Doro Wot in SF so when I was in the South Bay, I knew I had to get my fix. I couldn't decide between Walia or Zeni but went with Walia because they had higher ratings. Plus, it's located in a sketch plaza next door to Hustler...sounds like a hidden gem to me. Ordered delivery via UberEats and my order was delivered in 45 minutes...piping hot and everything securely packaged.F O O D***Food spread: bit.ly/32wqHqv* Kitfo: Freshly minced Ethiopian style tartar, special blend of niter kiebe, mitmita ($16.95)***Requested rare. Not the best item to order for takeout/delivery since the kitfo continued to cook in transit but it was delicious and the highlight of my meal. Beefy, buttery, and flavorful. No ayib (cottage cheese) or gomen (collard greens) to cut through the richness but it was a very generous portion of kitfo.* House Doro Wot: Slow cooked chicken, kulet sauce, niter kebe, meklesha, Ethiopian spices ($16.95)Richly spiced, complex, and flavorful tomato and pepper based sauce but not spicy enough (no option to specify spice levels).Since injera is used as an eating utensil, I was expecting the chicken to easily fall off the bone. While there were slits in the drumstick for the berbere spices to penetrate through, I had to use a fork and knife to cut it.* Misir Wot: Split red lentils, vegan kulet base, coriander mekelesha kimem ($13.95)My go-to vegan dish, the stewed lentils had a good creamy texture with a bite but mildly spiced. I ended up throwing in the entire container of mitmita (spiced chili powder) for flavor and heat. Problem solved.* Ingudai Tibs: Crimini mushrooms w/ onions, garlic, fresh tomatoes, berbere ($13.95)Meaty and earthy sautéed mushrooms but bland. If you're looking for a mild, non-spicy dish, this may be a good option.* Injera: Ethiopian fermented flatbreadI was happy to see a large portion of injera provided because yay for leftovers! But, the spongey injera had an off, unpleasant taste...like vinegary olives not a sour tang. As someone that detests olives, it threw off the entire meal for me because you can't enjoy Ethiopian food without injera. Maybe an off batch?Overall, the food was decent but underwhelming given the 4.5 star rating...because I'm accustomed to Ethiopian food with bolder spices/heat and the off tasting injera was such a bummer. 3.5 stars rounded up for a small local business.

Parking sucks cause there's a lot around but, I actually think it's the Hollywood customers taking up the parking on both sides but, find parking cause it's worth it especially if you've been wanting to try Ethiopian food or curious at all, Try It out cause they don't disappoint. I recommend you go with someone who knows about the food cause that way it's recommended but, the greeter, server, waiter is very friendly & accommodating too, so I'm pretty sure whoever is working will be willing & able to help you out if your u sure what to order. Love that they don't offer utensils cause you use your fingers when eating & of course utensils are at your request, even plates, they offer it but you don't need it. Perfect to share

I'd been here a few years ago while on a job in Santa Clara, and was impressed enough to try to find it again this trip. I did, and was not disappointed. So they have consistency, which is one of the hallmarks of a good restaurant. I had the vegetarian sampler, and it was really good. The chickpea portion was my favorite. Even the "greens" were pretty good. I would have liked having the Ethiopian green-bean dish included (I forgot the name), but it's not on the menu, so probably not possible. And it's not a deal breaker since the other portions were very good. My only other minor improvement I'd like to see is to have awaze tibs on the menu. But the food is solid. Check it out.
