Beautiful interiors and ambience, food was pretty good but not outstanding. However the ambience made up for it and I would return again. Service was excellent.
Be the first to ReplyThere's good and bad.
The drinks were really weak. The food is OK. Sadly, the opening biscuits and sweet butter were the best part. But I did leave satisfied enough not to be mad. Love the outdoor seating. The inside is cool. The bathrooms are so small. I almost didn't even fit into the stall and I am 110 pounds. The service was friendly, although the waiter disappeared for long periods twice. It's definitely a must try if you've never been. Love the location, off the beaten path. Not sure if I'll be back again but maybe :).

We had early reservations and were seated in the garden in the back. Food was good and great location! Will definitely go there again.

Was so excited to try this place, but left feeling disappointed. Food was okay. Nothing special about the wedge salad; blue cheese flavor was overpowering. Service was non-existent. Nobody checked in on us during our meal, and didn't say a single word while we paid. For how expensive the food is, this should be the bare minimum. Ambiance was nice, but very dark inside.

After missing the game winner in my NYC Basketball Men's League Game, I had never needed a Negroni more. The shot felt so good coming off of my hand too.. damn I'm getting re-mad just typing this rn. I showered at the gym to try and rid myself of the stench of failure, and booked it over to the Waverly Inn as I was meeting my 2 big homies for dinner. I arrived at what I thought was the wrong location, as it fooled me for a West Village townhouse at first. Quaint and unassuming. I entered and found my big homie at the bar, already drinking a Negroni. MY MAN! We were seated immediately and before my ass even hit the seat I ordered one, as I had to catch up. Upon sitting, I realized this is the exact ambiance I had been craving for my birthday dinner: A small low lit room, funky art on the wall that's probably done by some famous artist, long white table cloths, wood paneled ceilings, engaging waiters, staff dressed to the nines, old wooden chairs, etc. It's essentially everything I was hoping the ambiance at Peter Luger would be. It's a place where I just want to link and build. Right as I was taking it in, thinking about all the linking and building I could do here--BANG! Negroni on the table. All is well. As I was deciding on what to demolish, I noticed a quote at the top of the menu that read: "Waverly Inn - worst food in the city" -Donald J. Trump ahahahahahha that sh*t got me. That was funny. We opted to get Oysters, the Burrata, the Burger, the Chicken Pot Pie, and the Squid Ink Pasta. I love sharing mains as you get to just try a little bit of everything... I never could growing up though because my brother is a savage and we would go to war on shared plates. Kill or be killed with that man ahahha. I normally highlight a favorite, but honestly, everything was HITTIN. I guess if I had to I'd say the Oysters and the Squid Ink Pasta... Oh yeah actually those oysters were IT. Some of the best I've had in my mf life. Idk what my boy Pedro (our waiter) put in that 2nd negroni I ordered, but that had me ROCKED! Shoutout to Pedro. They do not skimp on the drinks here I promise you. The Negronis had us down so bad that we ordered the Bananas Foster dessert, which turned out to be a phenomenal decision. This was my introduction to a Bananas Foster. I didn't know until then, that I had been waiting my whole life for a Bananas Foster. I went to the restroom at one point, really just to get some pics for y'all but one of the staff members stopped me and said "Sorry we don't allow pictures in here." Her tone was so genuinely kind that I felt bad and was like wow I'm so sorry and she was all "don't worry, how would you have known?" paired with a diffusing smile ... That's so fair. What a nice way to say that. It also made me realize that I can be impacted/manipulated by someone's tone and facial expressions so easily ahahaha. I love meeting a great communicator... All in all, I love this place. If I could go back in time, I think the only thing I would change would be to change my birthday dinner from Peter Luger to here. Oh and I would want one more crack at that game winner in my NYC Basketball Men's League Game......... IG @jnov_ TIktok @jnov__
Be the first to ReplyA West Village hallmark, where cobblestone meets
A West Village hallmark, where cobblestone meets contemporary, lies the Waverly Inn. It whispers the secrets of old New York thru its ivy-clad facade and warms the modern soul with its hearth and hospitality. The garden seating is quaint and charming, the staff is genuine and warm, and the food is fine, albeit expensive. In a timeless nod to the NYC brunch classics, I ordered the eggs benedict, the crab cake, and a yogurt parfait. While reasonable all together, the English muffins were tough and near-impossible to cut, the poached eggs didn't quite exude the golden lava flow one desires, and the hollandaise was a bit thick. The crab cake had a good amount of tender, sweet crab meat, but the sauce felt very Whole Foods build-your-own-bar to-go aioli. To the positive, the biscuits and the fries were a hit amongst the table. The staff is very kind and welcoming, so despite the food's shortcomings, the altogether package was still pleasant. Maybe not the best food, but it's still an NYC institution.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, ate there after a play in 2023.
It was crowded right up to closing. Vibe was energetic.

The Waverly inn is one of those places that you will think back on for a long long time. Such a cozy and romantic place. If you have the chance to go do so

This is a great WV neighborhood gem and I highly recommend to anyone in the area. The chicken pot pie and cheeseburger are our go-tos and never miss! Also, if you go for brunch, my boyfriend is obsessed with their lattes -- they come in a fancy wine glass, great vibes. Can't wait to come back soon!
Be the first to ReplyHonestly the food is decent, but the vibes are 10/10.
You could come here and get a jar of mayonnaise and think it was great solely because of the ambiance and exceptional service. I would come here over and over and sit in the main room with the Edward Sorel mural.

On top of the menu they put a quote by Donald Trump saying the food at this restaurant is terrible. For once I have to agree with Trump on this one. Well, maybe not terrible but definitely doesn't stand the standard of their prices. $43 for a tasteless over cooked 6oz salmon, or $38 for an over powered mushroom risotto. Not mentioning the $26 for a glass of California red wine. The only reason I gave them an extra star is for the beautiful decor and good service. You can definitely skip this place and find a better use for over $300 dinner for two.
Be the first to ReplyI'd give it more than 5 stars if I could.
Restaurant was warm and cozy. We came for brunch and were completely wowed by the food. Server was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Do yourself a favor and get a side of bacon.

This review is just for the bar area, as we walked by and thought it looked really cozy on a wintery night (spoiler alert: it is, lol). We snagged seats by the bar and wished we had sat closer to the fireplace (it got pretty cold every time someone opened the door) and our bartender was really lovely. The mezcal margarita I got was excellent and the music choice here is....eclectic lol. The entire restaurant area was packed and there is a REALLY cute garden-like area in the back. I'll have to return to try their food. But in the meantime? This is a great date night spot to grab a cocktail (or two) in the evening.

The atmosphere was very nice:) definitely recommend sitting in the garden area, warm and cozy! Foods are great too! Truffle mac and cheese is a must-try! They are very generous with the truffle! We had the yellow fin tartare was also great! The duck is perfectly cooked and prepared! The Amish chicken was okay juicy but not impressed. We had the triple chocolate moose was pretty good too. I do recommend this place:)

$29 for jumbo shrimp and all we got was 4 regular size shrimp. And the host literally had pajamas on... great pajamas for sure but not what we want to see at a restaurant. Great space but the whole vibe was just so pretentious. A big regret.

Ambience everything was amazing! But as a big foodie living in NYC the food was sub par unfortunately. And very expensive for what it isn't.

Best part of the meal was the bread/biscuits! Warm, fluffy, pulled apart in pieces -- I'd go back for this alone. Great vibes inside with a LIVE tree near the back of the restaurant. For food, we got the steak and salmon. Both were fine but nothing special. The truffle fries were good thoughFries and bread were my fav part -- CARBS yum.

When we arrived for our lunch reservation we asked the hostess if there was availability in the garden room. She said she would check there was a table getting ready to leave. She left then returned to tell us there were no seats. Then the party of ( also) 3 behind us asked the hostess the same question. She leaned in and told them if they were willing to wait a few minutes! Which we would of been happy to do- as our 3rd person had not yet arrived. We proceeded to a lovely cozy dining room with a fire ! Our waiter arrived and he was awesome. When he came back with our drink order we tried to place the first course- typical to ny restaurants we were asked to place our full order at once. Our waiter left and the manager approached the table - confirmed that we had a third party coming and we said yes. He looked at us with an annoyed face and said we'll need this table at some point after we had been seated for less than 5 minutes. Our server was great and we loved our meal.
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite historic spots in the Village.
Amazing setting; the food and service are lovely. You must go.

Happy thanksgiving 11/24/22 Upon arriving at 4pm on Thanksgiving, we were at the bar drinking cosmopolitans. Maybe a 6 oz martini glass with minimal amount of grey goose vodka, I would say my expectations were NOT exceeded. 3 cosmos later, no buzz. We ordered the turkey special $90 & split amongst us...3 ppl. The dish was delicious! Turkey, gravy, cranberry, stuffing with Brussel sprouts..perfect! Very satisfying
Be the first to ReplyEverything was good but the lack of AC made us so
Everything was good but the lack of AC made us so uncomfortable we couldn't even enjoy our food. Imagine sitting down, barely moving and still sweating. Also our table was so close to other tables that we had trouble getting out.Food came and everything was alright but the Burrata dish was served with nasty stale bread and like 2 drops of balsamic lol. Bananas foster was good because it's always good, but I felt like it was made with minimal effort. Our server was amazing though.

A bit of History:I grew up at One Bank Street in the 40s, 50s and early 60s. The Waverley Inn was a family favorite. My parents dined there in the 1930s before they married, and later on with me. Once, I found a pearl and (very small) diamond ring. I turned it into the desk and when, a month later, alas! It remained unclaimed, the restaurant gave it to me. I have it still. My dad always said the chicken pot pie, he got for a quarter, was always the best on offer. My grammar school friends and I gathered there, sometimes, for a reunion lunch and I dined with my father and new husband, during the 60s. It was, then, a cozy step back in time. I understand it has become very upscale and no longer accessible to everyone. If true, that is a shame.
Be the first to ReplyLaughably bad.
Took my father last night and was utterly embarrassed. The restaurant that consistently served solid food with pleasant service is now a genuine New York City rip off. 3 small pieces of steak for $64? Accompanied with a large heap of inedible spinach. Absurd. Chicken pot pie was mediocre--have had better out of a freezer and to top it off, 2 of the dozen oysters ordered were bad. The waiter was unprofessional, largely absent--it took 3 requests for diet cokes halfway thru the meal. Sad that was once a good restaurant is no longer. Surprising that it's still in business.
Be the first to ReplyGood ambiance.
Good drinks. A bit slow at times. AC really needs repairs. Very very very pricey. And some of the staff was very rude. There's two hosts at the front- one extremely kind and the other has a major attitude. I wish I could remember our waiters name because he was working his tail-off, really kudos to him as he tried to get a fan working, constantly going back to the bar to get us our drinks. Overall good experience. I'd go back again but not my first choice.
Be the first to ReplyOh how the mighty fall.
.. what was once the epicenter of the West Village fashion and celeb scene now evidently caters to 23 year old couples on their 6 month anniversary dates and tourists who read about this hot spot in Zagat's eight years ago. For reference, I remember when this place opened--the only thing harder than getting a table was hearing what the other members of your party were saying while you stared at the celebs sitting behind them.I went back with a few friends last week for a low-key, but nice dinner. I totally understood that this place may have lost its former glitz, but boy were we more disappointed than we expected to be.Let me start by saying that I'm thoroughly experienced in fine dining in NYC and don't normally complain about prices, especially at a place that bills itself as a fine dining/special occasion establishment. IMO, you know what you're getting into whether it's 1) fire food and service and/or 2) a buzzy/sceney atmosphere. This place had neither--it was fine dining prices with corner joint service. A breakdown as follows:1. Ordered cocktails right off the bat, but the somm was nowhere to be found. After we informed our waiter that we'd like to order wine and have them open it to let it breathe (as most establishments do at the beginning of a seating), the waiter seemed confused. The somm showed up half an hour later, mid-way through our appetizers after we finished our cocktails. By the time the wine was ready to drink, we were almost done with our mains leaving us to finish almost the entire bottle after our plates were taken away (more on that below).2. One of my friends and I split a dozen oysters as an app. Many of them were improperly shucked and had their shells cracked in half. Shucking an oyster properly isn't a tall ask.3. By the time all the mains came, one of our sides was missing. When we informed our waiter that one dish wasn't present, he snapped "well you didn't order that before, but we can bring it out"... Lo and behold, five minutes later he came back and said that the kitchen did indeed receive the order with the original ticket, but was still working on it. 4. While our party was still finishing our food, they took our plates away without asking if we were finished. They just said "you're done with this right?", and cleared the table. No lie, I had food on the fork in my hand and they swiped the plate right from under me. It was 9:30PM and our res started at 8, and there were many tables open, so I highly doubt it was a timing issue. All in all, for the price, definitely skip it. Food was fine, nothing to write home about. If you're looking for upscale, cozy American food that is far better, try Freemans. If it's old school service and fine dining that you want, go to the River Cafe or Keen's, which has a similar menu but is a steakhouse.
