Our group of 6 went to celebrate a birthday, and each of us
Our group of 6 went to celebrate a birthday, and each of us completely loved the dishes, the ambience, and the service. The food was very creative and absolutely delicious. The service was not pretentious but still solicitous. It was casual enough that we felt like we were eating in someone's dining room, but the service and quality were of a restaurant that would have typically cost 3-4 times the price. One of us enjoyed the wine pairing as well. We all want to return to try out a different menu, since it changes weekly. (Also, we had dietary restrictions -- no meat or fowl or shellfish -- and they accommodated them graciously and deliciously.)
Be the first to ReplyThe food was good at times and then not on some.
It was quite an interesting mix. One dish was a bowl of pho broth, while another was steak and puréed cauliflower. Overall, I would say it was good. No complaints on the service, they were pretty on top of things. The disappointing thing was the automatic added 20% service charge to the bill. I would understand if it went to the workers, but it seemed like we were paying for their grocery shopping. So with our 20% tip, it was more like 40%. Very odd. On another note, the dessert and drinks were delicious. Unfortunately, we weren't wow'd, therefore, we probably wouldn't go back.
Be the first to ReplyWe have had wherewithall on our radar for the last few
We have had wherewithall on our radar for the last few months. We finally pulled the trigger last Friday and unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed. It began when our bottle of wine was opened at the table and as the cork was pulled out wine went splashing all over the table. While I love the idea of a rotating seasonal menu, every single course we ate was just average. After each course we placed our dirty utensils on our plates for them to be taken away and replaced with clean silverware for our next dish. We were taken aback when our dirty utensils were continually placed back on the table for us to use for the next dish. Lastly, adding 20% to our bill that clearly stated it wasn't a tip? Very confusing. I understand covid surcharges but expecting me to pay an extra 20% twice is just ridiculous. Wait staff was very young and you could tell they were very inexperienced. Overall, would not return or recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWhat an amazing experience.
The food was delicious and innovative. The ambiance was great too. I really enjoyed the specialty drinks. I will most definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyI can't believe Wherewithall isn't talked about more as one
I can't believe Wherewithall isn't talked about more as one of Chicago's best restaurants. The ambiance is comfortable and understated. You can actually have a conversation. The service is outstanding. We did the wine pairing with the fixed price 4 course menu. The food was inventive and delicious. The wine pairing was excellent. Yes, it was expensive. However, I'm happy to pay more when you are getting really well prepared food, great wine, and attentive service. Overall it was a great experience and I would highly recommend Wherewithall.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I celebrated my birthday at Wherewithall on
My husband and I celebrated my birthday at Wherewithall on December 29th. The service was great. The food progression and wine pairings were very good. My only complaint is the cod course was cold and as we were finishing the course, out came a server with 2 small bowls of grapes! She explained that the grapes were "left off the plates". I didn't miss the grapes or think their arrival after the fact served any positive purpose. Perhaps, re-do the course or just let it go? We ate the cold grapes. We also chose the cheese pairing which was just so-so. Full disclosure: I work in the cheese industry so probably should have passed on the cheese course. Overall, it was a celebration to remember. But, my least favorite course was the pork. The pork was cooked well; I mean literally. the sauce was its saving grace but there was so little of it. Can't say that we plan to return but will keep an open mind. Perhaps this menu was not their finest or most creative but I give it a C+
Be the first to ReplyTotally outstanding.
The thoughtful menu is new every week and the wine pairings were perfect. All of the food was so fresh and flavorful, and the portions were good sizes. I got the vegetarian courses and they were solid. My favorite was the cabbage in brown butter sauce with squash. I left feeling super full! Service was well balanced. The environment is casual and cozy-- easy to have a conversation but not too intimate. The place itself is really cool with its funky decor and low-fi hip hop. A great spot for a special experience.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I came a few weeks ago on our staycation
My husband and I came a few weeks ago on our staycation honeymoon. The meal was so good! Extremely filling with a variety of ingredients and flavors. The staff was extremely nice and helpful in explaining all of the courses. We'll absolutely be back! It's a seasonal menu so the dishes will rotate, but our favorite was the dessert. The meal included several other "bites" in between courses, so we felt the value was very high. Drinks were great as well.
Be the first to ReplyService was excellent.
Very attentive and on top of everything. If the bartender was busy, the manager swooped right in to help.I'd say the food was great. Especially the prawns. It was rich but not too rich. They were cooked perfectly. Tons of flavor but tender and the butter wasn't overpowering even if somehow they were drenched in it.The chicken, however, was mediocre. Cooked well but the sauce was just a little too sweet that it hurt the palate. It was less a flavor bomb and more of something you'd find in a sports bar chain that overseasoned their wings. Flavors were amazing though. Just too much.
Be the first to ReplyI had hair in my food!!! You're a Michelin star
I had hair in my food!!! You're a Michelin star restaurant, so means that hair should never be in anyones food! My wife and I go out once a month for date night and the fact that I had hair in my food and no manager came to our table to make it right is unacceptable! Michelin star..what a joke!
Be the first to ReplyI had high hopes for a high end restaurant like this.
Service was EXTREMELY slow. Like half hour between courses. Mind you,!85 a pre fix menu and literally everyone eats the same thing. The server apologized that they were backed up in the kitchen. I'm like you have reservations so you know how many people are coming to eat the SAME THING. Then they had to audacity to charge us a flat 20% tip. On a prefix menu w wine pairing that was an additional $61.5 . They did not deserve that. We're not going back. Only reason we're even 2 stars is the appetizer and dessert was great. The fish and main dish was a-ok. Nothing to write home about. Super disappointing experience, overall.
Be the first to ReplyWherewithall is always an amazing experience.
Great food, great drinks and great service. One of the best restaurants in Chicago. Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyAn incredible evening with Wherewithall.
We had the menu with wine pairing and cheese as well. Each dish was beautifully presented, but more importantly delicious! I absolutely loved experiencing the variety from baked clams, to broth, incredible bread and butter, lamb, etc. Every dish was incredible. The staff was so kind and welcoming, and did a great job explaining each menu item. The meal consisted of many courses, some stated as mains on the menu and some as tastes that weren't on the menu. The atmosphere is beautiful, the bathrooms are clean and well designed, and the kitchen is incredible! I would recommend this for anyone who wants unique food, in season ingredients, and an upscale tasting menu meal. Thank you for an incredible night!
Be the first to ReplyBest tasting menu we have had.
We got the wine and cheese pairing. Did not have a bad bite and left very full. Received a little treat to go. Service was amazing. A place you will leaving feeling it was worth the money! Hope this place does well.
Be the first to ReplyGreat dinner last night at Wherewithall.
Service was fantastic -- attentive and knowledgeable. They accommodated my pescatarianism and even had a separate printed menu for me. Food was thoughtful, delicious, and I left feeling full but not overly full. Wine pairings were fantastic. Go check this place out.
Be the first to ReplyCharming room, free street parking.
Menu of the week has always been interesting., and based on what is in season, local, accessible, so each plate meets variable levels of success.Attentive servers, comfortable room. Not on website menu, but instead on a separate website page is this disclaimer:"we believe in transparency in all that we do, so we are taking this relaunch opportunity to address inequity issues inherent in the traditional restaurant template. for now, there will be an automatic "transitional service charge" of 20% added to each bill. this will allow us to increase wages for our service and kitchen staff, eliminate the subminimum (sic) wage, and provide benefits such as healthcare, dental, and paid time off, with hopes to include 401k and parental leave as well. we are calling it "transitional" because it will take time for the restaurant industry to adjust to the true cost of food and wages and more simply and elegantly reflect them in menu prices alone; until it becomes standardized, we are in this transitional period.though by no means required, if you love your service and would like to leave an additional tip, 100% of it will go to the service team.a slim silver lining of the pandemic was that it provided us a moment for reflection and time to rethink the brokenness of the old restaurant template; we believe it's time to rebuild better for the future; this is one of our first steps on that path.thank you all for your love, understanding and support. we couldn't do this without you."I do not recall this statement being on the written menu, so was I surprised, and the pleasure of the evening was corrupted. The logic of the surcharge in part for wages, yet encouraging a separate tip begs the question of why not just raise prices, and then still maintain tipping. tips Also seemed seemed to me current staff who't need health insurance , or parental leave are being shortchanged by this method.
Be the first to ReplyStill a wonderful place to dine! We finally visited again
Still a wonderful place to dine! We finally visited again and while so many places are struggling with service in this pandemic world, no signs of that here. Service was excellent and attentive. Our food was once again fantastic and made more filling by so many add on bites. It's a 4 course prix fixe, but we counted 9. Plus a generous gift of some white wine to accompany our fish because we ordered a bottle of red.We do wish our plates had come out a bit slower (we were chatting away), but that's more about us than them. We will try to come back more frequently, but if I lived closer I be there often!
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant was AMAZING!!!! I can not say enough good
This restaurant was AMAZING!!!! I can not say enough good things about the experience from start to finish. The food was out of this world, the staff are AMAZING, and the service was impeccable. So personal and a beautiful experience with my BFF in town for my bday weekend. This was my first fine dining experience in close to two years as my son is immunocompromised and had a major surgery in March 2020. I am being extremely careful. They sat us outside in their beautiful patio area and it was intimate and delightful. Such a special restaurant with a big heart! I can not wait to return!!!!! Thank you to al of the amazing staff.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic meal from start to finish.
Exceptional food and stellar service. Everything was super fresh with interesting flavors. Given their menu changes weekly I will definitely be back again.
Be the first to ReplyThis is one of the best restaurants I've been to.
The professionalism of the staff, the quality of the food, and the ambiance create a perfect evening. Be sure to do the wine pairing as they curate wines from places you likely wouldn't have tired. I cannot wait to come back!
