Thoughtfully curated, fairly priced
Since discovering this shop a few years ago, we haven’t bought wine anywhere else. Don’t be discouraged by the tightly edited selection: every wine Todd sells is there for a reason, and he has never failed to find a match for every meal. His prices aren’t the lowest in town, but we’re happy to pay for the expertise of a merchant who can’t take advantage of volume discounts. As winter visitors to St. Pete, we’re in the habit of asking Todd to prepare a couple of mixed cases for our arrival, based on my husband’s direction. The more Todd knows about your tastes and requirements, the better the service you’ll receive. He doesn’t project what’s known as “the sales personality” but he knows his wines and knows his regular customers.

I can't even imagine a friendlier or more knowledgeable wine shop owner. We went to his blind wine tasting, which he has the first Friday of every month. It was very informative - even mind blowing in what we learned about our preconceptions of wine. Ted was gracious and allowed us to make utter fools of ourselves in the nicest of manners. He runs tastings every Friday. He and Fiona, his beautiful dog make a welcoming pair.

I went to a blind wine-tasting at the Winesmith with a friend. It was our first time going to the tasting and the shop. We loved it! The tasting was for 6 wines, but the owner threw in an extra wine because he wanted us to try it. We had nice conversation with him and the wines were great and I thought it was reasonable to taste 7 wines for $15. I also love Fiona the honorary pup of Winesmith!

Owner sits in back and makes fun of his "clients" with unflattering photos on Instagram - NOTE: even while these customers are patronizing his humble establishment. He has no problem taking your hard earned money, though.

I have been to several tasting here and a stop in for some wi r by the glass. While I can see the other reviewers point of view I also think that this establishment does a lovely job with tastings. The selection in unique and the price points are on point. Worth a stop! Don't be dissuaded!

I've purchased no less than a dozen bottles of wine from Winesmith, and also attended several tastings. The wines in the shop are just fine - some different labels you won't see elsewhere but a small selection. I am unable to comment on the prices. The proprietor's demeanor though leaves much to be desired. We love to support the local businesses but the owner sure does make you feel unwelcome and unwanted. At the last wine tasting I attended, I brought 6 friends with me. Mind you it was $15 per person. I was downright embarrassed as the owner made everyone feel like an inconvenience to him. Hey Todd - Pro Tip: Don't work in the hospitality industry if you can't be the least bit hospitable.
Be the first to Replywine spectator wannabe, with a dash of impolite...
I don't usually write bad reviews, but, from time to time, an experience just leaps out for its poverty, and the wine tasting at this place is one of those experiences. Firstly, let me just observe that we were attending a fundraising event, and if not for that single redeeming quality, there would have been no other. Best wishes to the St.Pete Women's Collective... Now for Winesmith. We arrived a bit early, and the host (perhaps he was the owner, but who could tell: he never identified himself and acted like we were unwelcome, and lest the reader should infer that there was perhaps some deficit in our appearance-- casual Friday, for example-- it seems prudent to note that we were dressed for the evening (which our "casual Friday" host was not). No, he was just surly and dismissive. We went for a stroll so as not to inconvenience him before the proper opening of the event; when we returned, was he polite? No-- he was not; nor had he made any effort to improve his attire. As a former client of "Wine Watch" in Ft Lauderdale, I'm accustomed to sampling some truly excellent wines (though it would be incorrect to think me an oenophile); a tour of his inventory revealed an adequate, though small& slightly unimaginitive, inventory of passable-to-good table wines-- sadly, nothing one couldn't buy less dearly at the supermarket. Still, my girlfriend is a wine buyer, and we both feel very strongly about supporting local businesses. She had hoped to leave with at least one bottle. There was a nice cheese board, but it felt rather small & crowded. There was no facility for rinsing glasses-- the stewards rinsed our glasses with the next pour. The refrigerator in clear view of the room, the hole in the ceiling, and the exuberant dog licking my shoes just kind of added to the overall milieu of tackiness. As I was walking my girlfriend to the car across the street, I had his two glasses in my hand, and had intended to sprint across the street to return them once I got her situated, but that was entirely unnecessary: our dismal host chased us into the street and offered one last nasty comment: I guess his surly behavior to that point must have felt somehow incomplete. I'm glad we contributed to the St.Pete Women's Collective; needless to say, Winesmith has lost a new customer on our very first time in his store-- what a dreary performance, all the way around.

Stopped in to pick up a few bottles of wine for a dinner party, walked in and saw 2 guys drinking wine I believe one of them barefoot. There was a dog and dog stuff all over the floor. Wine selection size was equivalent to that of an isle in a grocer...I will say their selection of wine is superior to a grocer but over priced. I would have still made a purchase if the owner who happened to be the barefoot man hanging out with a buddy drinking hadn't been so rude....I guess I interrupted their trailer park wine party. I am assuming this man's wife works and he opened a store as a hobby to hang out with buddy's on his wife's dime. Get a haircut, shoes and get a real job!
Be the first to ReplyAwful service and overpriced wines
Caught the owner yell at a customer for missing a sample. Owner accused the patron of deliberately missing a sample. Never seen such terrible service. Wines are way way overpriced.

We stopped here with another couple while bar hopping downtown hoping to mix in a light wine tasting. We were greeted at the door by a friendly dog (not really what we would expect at a wine store.) We wandered around and noted a very limited selection of wines and prices that were top of the market. They were hosting a Rose wine tasting for $15 which is on the high side (I think for 5 tastes). We told the host we each wanted to share our tastings (something we have done and dozens of wine bars and tasting rooms so we can limit our intake and enjoy more bar hopping) and he immediately stated that he would not allow that and he simply walked away from the 4 of us. We were shocked at his attitude and unfriendly demeanor and very surprised that he would object to us sharing a tasting. We were't asking him to pour any more than he would for 2 people, and since we are not huge Rose fans, we didn't want to indulge in expensive tastings for all 4 of us. While he has a good tourist location amidst other Bars and Restaurants, I would recommend Sympatico in Tampa, where we enjoyed tasting 6 wines (plus 2 bonus tastes after talking to the host) for only $10, and they allowed us to share tastings. They have about 10 times more wines in their store and their prices were easily 30% less expensive. The location is not as convenient, but it is worth the drive. Take an Uber!
