Abominable
Managed to get reservations for a Tuesday night for my wife’s birthday. Busy, but did not seem overly busy for the number of tables available. Early pressure to order everything at once. Wanted cocktails first, then starters a salad and the the main course. Wait staff seemed disjointed…wanted us to order everything initially. Ordered cocktails which were OK. Ordered Oysters which were OK. Ordered main meal. After more than 30 minutes (while we saw later arriving diners get their entrees) we still did not get our order. Spoke to the server who said “the kitchen was very busy”. This was not a reasonable excuse. I said we needed our entrees promptly in the next few minutes or I needed to speak to the manager. After a few more minutes the manager came and told us he only found out about the delay. Poor organization. He said the food was “being plated” . After another delay, no food arrived. I refused to pay anything for such terrible service! No matter how busy the restaurant is/was this should not be the excuse for shoddy service. The food may be great, but if the service is terrible it counter-acts the “top 25 restaurants in San Francisco” as touted by the New York Times. Unable to comment on the food at this restaurant. Find it difficult to want to return here and the taxi fare paid to get here

Great dinner! We loved the interesting food choices, the gnocchi was the best. The service was very very good, and the light and airy restaurant was very relaxing. A real gem.

2:15 pm lunch on a Wednesday in July. It’s a quiet time. We sat at a 2 top by the window that was not very comfortable. Peppers on the on the plancha were excellent. Wild salmon was delicious. It seems the lunch menu was much smaller then the sample, but it could be the time of year or day of the week. The wine list was decent with several .375 to choose from. It’s a decent spot with a good location and history. Not memorable…
Be the first to ReplyInteresting space, great food
Zuni has lots of eating spaces on multiple levels, which gives a large restaurant an intimate feel. The service, food, and wine were all excellent, and the staff was very accommodating finding space for us several hours before our late-night dinner reservation -- always worth calling and asking. This place was recommended by a local for a "special" meal, and we weren't disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyFamous chicken!
We shared the famous chicken dish, and really enjoyed it. The service was attentive and moved our appetizers and drinks along at a good pace before our chicken was ready, as it does take an hour. It was a nice atmosphere and very high quality food. This restaurant also has a decent half-bottle wine selection, which was great and not something I see very often as someone whose spouse cannot drink for medical reasons.
Be the first to ReplyKitchen, excellent; service, meh
Finally made a long-anticipated visit to the Zuni Cafe late on a weekday afternoon while passing through San Francisco. The dining rooms are bright and lively, and the servers are nattily attired, but after a warm welcome at the entrance, service was pretty chilly. The numerous waiters who served our table seemed in a hurry to get us out of there (the restaurant was not busy). We'd had the appetizers -- a plate of olives and fantastic slices of sourdough bread with fresh butter -- for about three minutes when our entrees were pushed onto the table. The burger was excellent, and a entree Caesar salad was lemony and delicious. Might have lingered for dessert or another glass of wine had the service been a little more gracious. The bill for our table of two came with a 20 percent service charge already added.
Be the first to ReplyChoose another place, this Cafe is highly over rated
Sorry, but the famous chicken was dry and flavorless. I am not joking when I say that the $5 chicken at Costco is significantly better. The waiter was pleasant and a joy. However, the food is highly over rated. We had the shoestring potatoes to fill the 1 hour wait for the chicken. Because the potatoes are thin, they cool within a couple of minutes. My wife does not drink, so she had a lemonade. I had a glass of wine. No dessert, and the bill was $184. Outrageous for this.
Be the first to ReplyWhat do people see in this restaurant?!
We were really looking forward to visiting this restaurant so many people and press had recommended. However not only were we very disappointed with the quality of the food, but we both got sick! We decided to forgo the chicken and got fish and certainly cannot say that it was good. Major disappointment!

Always a pleasure to be here for the last 30+ years. Great food and incredible service. You, along myself, help shape San Francisco ;)
Be the first to ReplyBest seat in house with adventurous menu
The fig appetizer was an adventure that unfolded with each bite. The rest (flank steak) was satisfying but not enticing. Fabulous service and exceptional corner window seat. The menu is updated daily and farm oriented which is a standout feature.
Be the first to ReplyWaiter Lied
Food is good but the waiter lied and said no when we asked if the 25% surcharge was a tip. We left a cash tip too. Will never darken their door again. Not polite to lie to customers. We live in San Francisco and always like Zuni before they went woke. And now lying waiters. No thank you.
Be the first to ReplyThe amazing chicken, but service was below par
We had to come back here for the chicken. It is to die for. We hadn't been in 2 years, so we were very eager to revisit Zuni. Found out when we had cocktails at the bar that Zuni instituted a 25% 'Fair-wage' surcharge. More on this part later. We ordered appetizer, a side dish, and waited for our chicken (takes about an hour). I ordered a Croze Hermitage, our waiter brought a different Hermitage which I didn't realize. My fault for not catching it. Price difference is significant (he brought out a more expensive one) but I didn't complain since I had acknowledged the bottle when it was shown to me. But throughout dinner we had to stopped bus boys and other servers to ask for our waiter. During our 2+ hour stay we had to ask for him 4 times. And we kept seeing a team of waiter hanging out in the kitchen. So to be imposed a 25% fair wage surcharge for service??? I would tip more if service warranted that. We wondered if the service staff is now guaranteed that minimum amount, why would they work harder? It was just an unpleasant dining experience. Maybe the ownership should pay higher wages to their staff.

3.5 Zuni Café San Francisco Wide open spaced seating Friendly staff Cheeseburger was okay Lamb stew was uninspiring Place is overpriced, especially with San Francisco taxes Lost some of its charm
Be the first to ReplyI hadn't been for 30 years and wow, still A+
Kudos to a business, much less a restaurant that can maintain excellence for decades. Same vibe, same excellent service and impeccable cuisine. Appreciated in March of 2022 they were checking COVID vax cards, bar top seating still removed and notice w/ menu stating a surcharge for living wages, a notice that could not be missed w/ perfect wording. The sole was HEAVEN. Superb wine, beer and cocktail list.
Be the first to ReplyMake that roast chicken for 3
We had the famous roast chicken with bread salad for lunch. It did not disappoint, but there is so much of it that it could be better shared with 3 people instead of 2. An order of the shoestring potatoes helped pass the hour-long wait for the bird. The balsamic bloody Mary was unusual and tasty. Service was fine. Enjoyed the piano and accordion serenade at the Saturday lunch.
Be the first to ReplyVery underwhelming.
Very underwhelmed. My friend recommended this cafe so I decided to go there for my last meal for the trip in SF. I ordered a neri spaghetti with clams. The portion was tiny. The taste was alright. Nothing special. The restaurant doesn't serve latte with any other milk apart from full fat milk. I was quite surprised given this is California. Cancelled it and asked for the bill. The latte was still on the bill. The waiter said he would correct it and he did. The restaurant champions 25% surcharge and calls it fair wage. It basically means they don't pay their waiters enough so you have to tip more. I know 20% is normal in America but 25% by default. Meh... So all in all a very underwhelming and overpriced meal.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointment
This restaurant came highly recommended to us. It is clearly run by people who are focused on vegetarian fare and provide meat dishes and fish only because they must. We started with a salad that was fine if you like very acidic vinaigrette dressing. Many people do but we are wine drinkers and the salad is not wine friendly. We then had what were called lamb crostini with chard and mint. The crostini were buried in a huge mound of the chard and mint. There was shredded lamb through it. The dish as a whole was unremarkable and the lamb if separated out was nearly tasteless.
We had the pork chop with brussel sprouts and roasted carrots. The pork chop was OK but completely bland and slightly overcooked. The baby roasted carrots were delicious.
The absolute worst was the wine service. The “by the glass“ list is completely adequate but we wanted a bottle. They have an excellent Saint Joseph on the list by Gonon. This is a big red wine that requires an adequate red wine glass. The only glasses in the restaurant were little 6 ounce tasting glasses. Even worse, they stank of soap. Soap is anathema to wine.
Finally, this is a restaurant that must seat 75 people. It was full. They have two one person unisex bathrooms.
Historic restaurant with need to change
The food at Zuni was really nice. We had the famous roast chicken with bread salad. It was good. 15 years ago, I would have been amazed but this kind and quality of food is far more prevalent. It felt like a Sunday night roast chicken that I could easily replicate. Portions were big for San Francisco standards.
other items on the menu looked really good. The oysters were fresh. The shoestring fries haystack looked really tasty. Overall, I am sure you could eat and enjoy the meal.
However this is definitely not the restaurant to go out of your way to visit. It doesn’t merit the hard to get reservations nor its pricing.
The staff need training. I watched a waiter pour hot water into a cup, its saucer and all over a table and then leave it for the customer to use. Plates and empty bottles routinely sat on tables without anyone coming to grab them. While not show stoppers, this is the mark of a high service restaurant and it just wasnt there when we went.
It was okay. I enjoyed my meal. I wont be coming back though.
Taxing customers on optional tips
They charge taxes in the gratuity that they force (that’s right, you can not ask them to remove gratuity). You’ll have to do the math, SF tax is about 8.6%.
Taxing patrons on optional gratuity… is illegal.
Also, I’m sure charging tax on the 5% mandate is illegal too.
“An optional payment designated as a tip, gratuity, or service charge is not subject to tax.”
Lunch
I had a sandwich here it was adequate. Nothing to write home about. But then again it is just lunch. So not supposed to be anything exciting right? Have often eaten in the restaurant and it’s better. Not sure what they’re trying to do with a cafe it kinda ruins the restaurant atmosphere. That’s just my opinion.
Be the first to ReplyZuni did not disppoint
Visiting from Canada I had been told about this restaurant prior to arriving in SF. It was a bit challenging to get a reservation ( I would recommend booking before you arrive if visiting from out of town). First off, I loved the building itself, the 'flat-iron-ish' architeture but with windows everywhere. Just stunning. The whole vibe was on point. I did think the choice of chairs in the upstairs loft area did not fit with rest of design, but I digress. Now, to the important part - the food. It was probably the best buretta salad I have ever had. I am still thinking about it. The roast chicken - actually takes 60 minutes while you wait - was to die for. We were two people and couln't finish so lovely to take some with you. The dessert had edible flowers and a soft merigne - again, one I will remember. I bought the cookbook, so that tell you something.
Be the first to ReplyA delicious classic!
I have bee to Zuni Cafe three times over 3 years when I visit town for a conference. It has been there a long time. The quality is top notch in service, food, experience. I am counting down the days to return! If you will be in SF, make your reservation ahead of time to score a table. And if you like fries (shoestring potatoes sticks with the best texture and taste! Don’t miss theirs! No matter what I order, a side of fries is always a must! Thank you, Zuni Cafe team for the consistency outstanding experience!
Be the first to Replyhas Zuni jumped the shark?
I have always loved this place and have visited for at least 15 years whenever in San Francisco. However, on Saturday, March 7, 2020, our lunch was disappointing. The famous caesar salad was overdressed and the lettuce had not been well dried after washing. A vegetarian pizza was lukewarm when it arrived and the flavours (kale, wagon wheel cheese, green onions) were not well balanced. On top of it all, our server, a young woman named Sarah, was inattentive and after an hour we felt that she was trying to turn the table (for example, my companion asked for more water and hers was filled while mine was not. Sarah gave us a tight smile to boot.) In short, it was not a warm and welcoming experience. Not sure if I'll be back again soon.
Be the first to ReplyGreat, fun vibe!
We recently dined here and it was very, very good. The signature chicken to share was really tasty! (allow an hour) The restaurant inside is much bigger than it appears! Very fun evening!
