Just ok.
Sadly a restaurant where I often went to a couple of times per week, gave way to not only raising prices, but cutting portion size and quality. The greek salad, is now perhaps half of what it used to be and the vegetables are not fresh. The fish is still good. The cheesecake which used to be sinful, now has supermarket quality. Service was still good.
Be the first to ReplyA nice evening with delicious food and wine
This was our last evening after a week in NY with our kids (3 and 8). Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Adjusted food for the kids. Tasty food, large enough portions. We also took the tiger shrimps, nice choice. Good wine also, nice sommelier. Although it is a large venue, you didn’t had the feeling it was overcrowded or too noisy.
Be the first to ReplyAvra Madison - Average, expensive and overrated
So, I've walked past this restaurant on numerous occasions and always wanted to try it out as it looks very inviting from outside on W60th. But from the start, it was all a bit of a disappointment. We had an early sitting as we had theatre tickets for a show later at 8pm. I had made the reservation over the phone the day before, and not via Resy, so when we arrived no one was able to find my reservation in the system. Nothing had been logged. So, that was annoying to start with. After a while of people checking, we were promptly seated right by the bar, which is also annoying as it's a constant walk-through with people coming and going. I was super disappointed to see a huge TV screen playing football - who wants this, in what is meant to be a high-end sea food restaurant? Go to a sports bar if you want football. I asked to move tables and this was agreed by the staff, (however, it clearly was a problem for them even though the restaurant was far from full ) but at one point, there were 6 members of staff all crowded behind the check-in counter, some doing nothing and playing with their hair, others just talking and standing around, some looking lost and without a job to do. And suddenly there was huge influx of other diners resulting in a big bottleneck. The restaurant manager needs to sharpen up on the arrival of diners and managing the seating arrangements. We then sat and it took nearly 10 mins just to be greeted and offered water. Yet, the restaurant was OVERLOADED with wait staff, servers, groups of them laughing and talking together doing nothing - such a bad look in any restaurant. Our own server was nice enough when he came to our table, but nothing was truly personal, it was more just transactional. The food was just ok in the end. It's way overpriced as other diners have noted, and the price of fresh fish from the middle counter where you can choose from is ludicrous. Some at $75 - $150 a pound. Our shrimps which we started with had clearly been frozen prior, as they were rubbery and a bit tough. Portions were small too and actually nothing one couldn't struggle preparing at home. In all, it was an overrated dinner for sure, the interior is nice but there's much better and way more affordable elsewhere. Go to Kiki's on Division in Chinatown for a more fun, authentic and not as absurdly expensive Greek-inspired experience.

Excellent spot. Just steps away from Central Park, stylish, tasty food and splendid service. Everything you might ask for and a little more

Hubby and I came to this restaurant with our friends. Our friends wanted to celebrate our birthdays, so here we were. We had a booth table. It's a gorgeous restaurant with beautiful Greek-style decorations, which are covered by creamy colors all around it. Nice! Well, almost all the fancy Greek restaurants we went to used the same cream color in the background. We ordered Greek salad to start, and our friends had Tuna tartar. Greek salad was authentic. Great tomato, and all other ingredients were crunchy except, of course, Feta cheese. The pepper, onions, tomato, and cucumber were crunchy, so we know they're young and fresh! For the entree, I had branzino! Why not! It's a Greek restaurant. They prepare fish the best! Btw, I chose the fish with head and tail on. Fresh and without a fishy smell, that's the fish I like! Hubby had Prime NY Steak. It was tempting to try it, but my fish was more nourishing than the steak lol. We also ordered grilled vegetables with the entrees. After spoiling ourselves with the meals, we had the nerve to order Baklava. That's not all. It came with a scoop of ice cream too! Now I want to know whose idea to bring us baklava ala mode when you know very well I don't eat dessert? I don't eat, I don't chew dessert. I swallow the dessert! We had a great dinner and were very thankful for our birthday dinners from our friends. I made the right choice. The restaurant became crowded fast, even though we went on a Sunday night. Service was top-notch. Thanks!
Be the first to ReplyGlitzy and people watching establishment
Large choice of fish cooked the Greek way. The space is very large and always crowded. Lots of people watching and be prepared for a lot of noise and a very pricey menu. Outside is a little calmer if you want less excitement. Waiters are polite and service is very good but some of the fish dishes can become very expensive as they are based on weight. Deserts are typically Greek so be prepared. This is a place to bring visitors to NYC to watch the hubbub ...... but the bill can be very high so be prepared
Be the first to ReplyLoved it but waiters a bit over zealous!
Great atmosphere and food was fantastic. Will def go back. Service was great. Only slight niggle was that they were trying to turn the tables too quickly, so waiters were rushing us a bit … but on the whole excellent. Great fish
Be the first to ReplyPerfectly wonderful
Really enjoyed Avra 48th near Lexington in NYC. Had a wonderful lunch and enjoyed so much, we went the next day. Even better with our cordial, professional and interesting server, Kostantinos. Our choice were branzino, octopus carpaccio, dorado. Prices were 36.50 prix fixe. Very reasonable and great value.

The outdoor space is unusually lovely as is the indoor space. Prices reflect decor and expensive location. Our waiter was a true professional and patient. The starter Greek salad looked lavish. The salmon looked superb. The orange cake for dessert won raves. The grilled flat bread is addictive.
Be the first to ReplySeafood transported us back to Greece!
We stumbled upon Avra while walking in midtown and are so glad we did! Food and service were outstanding, as was the ambiance. Hands down had one of the best ever preparations of Chilean sea bass - and the portions were very ample. Split the orange cake for dessert and topped it off with excellent expresso martinis. Expensive but worth it - highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyPoor quality manager
I like the place a lot, the food was great. However it was insolence from manager of the Avra Madison to come to the guest and say that we left not enough tips. It was rude and unprofessional and spoiled my mood for the evening. It’s my choice to leave as much tips as I want. Have 0 tolerance to the guest. No comments more.

Food was good but not great. Prices were beyond outrageous. There are much better choices in nyc. Very nice ambience and very good service.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible and disrespectful experience
This was our third time in Avra, the first 2 were very pleasant so we decided to go again in our first NY trip after the pandemic. We seated in the worst table even tough we made a booking in advance. The table was in the lower level close to the stairs on the kitchen door. We asked to seat on the upper level and the answer was “not possible”. The waiter was very disrespectful and intrusive. Always rushing us into fast choices. Most of the times interrupting me while I speak and always saying words in Spanish - I am a portuguese speaker. Food was below average, the shrimp was overcooked and dry, the $15 blakava was old and not crunchy at all. I asked for a glass of wine and did not receive the menu to choose, the waiter made the decision for me (and chose the cheapest Chardonnay). After he brought the check, he came to the table 2 times to check if I had already put my card. I just paid the service to avoid a scandal but it definitely did not deserve it. Terrible, terrible experience… as it was our last night in NY I let it go and did not want to create trouble but I felt deeply disrespected. Avra never again!
Be the first to ReplyFresh delicious Greek food, entertaining atmosphere and excellent service!
The food was outstanding. Fresh caught daily fish. Prepared simply and executed perfectly ! Our server, Samuel, was knowledgeable, accommodating and generous! We loved it and will go back on our next NY visit!

Be the first to ReplyGreat Fish & Seafood
Bustling, large space, packed bar, attractive and attentive help. Excellent selection of fresh fish and seafood all displayed on a bed of ice. Interesting wine list containing a number of good Greek whites. One of our companions stated it was her favorite restaurant experience ever. Been three times, know we will be back.
Be the first to ReplyPleasant Surprise, Tasty Food and Pleasant Environment

Be the first to ReplyHorrible Service
My family and I dined here for the first time on Christmas Eve, and it was a horrible experience! From the moment we ordered, our waiter Paul seemed bothered by our presence, even rolling his eyes at one point. At the end of the meal, he literally snatched my credit card out of my hand. I brought it to the attention of the manager, Ricos, who offered us desserts. After this experience, there was no way we were going to eat anything else from this kitchen. The food and ambiance were okay, but being treated like second-class citizens overshadowed the entire experience. I highly recommend trying Ethos (an excellent alternative) or Del Frisco’s, both of which are more friendlier options.
Be the first to ReplySuperb fish restaurant…..
Just had another great visit to Avra on 60th….. The service and food here are unrivaled in my opinion. We had a cocktail at the bar before being seated in a cozy booth and having another exquisite dinner at one of our favorite NY restaurants. Oysters to start, followed by Dover sole (cooked to perfection) for my husband and rack of lamb for me…..accompanied by oregano fries and of course a Greek salad. Rick, the sommelier gave us an education on different Greek wines although we went with French for the oysters and main dishes. Nick, who is in charge of operations, makes sure your dining experience is unforgettable……thanks again guys…... We’ll be back next time we’re in the city! Also, not to forget the lovely Emily who remembered us from our last visit…..;)

Disappointing customer service. They got the wrong order three times and didn't apologize once. They acted like it was my fault. Food was overcooked. I have gone there before but from the hostesses to the servers perhaps they are under new management and don't care about the customer experience

We dined outside and the atmosphere was lovely. We were served crispy pita with hummus and olives. Unfortunately our waiter was very overworked so service was very slow…he tried his best but…it was even difficult getting water. We all ordered off the price fixed lunch menu. Appetizers were very good and generous portions. I ordered the swordfish kabob which was delicious. Everyone else ordered salmon and they all seemed underwhelmed ..no one finished their salmon.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing experience and poorest restaurant in NYC
I informed the server the halibut was overcooked it was dry and.little flavour. Little acknowledgment of my complaint and no management response. My partners king prawns were warm not hot and again lacking in flavour. Service ok but a training is needed
Be the first to ReplyRecommended fine dining on the Upper East Side.
Best octopus I have had in North America. Food is excellent. This place is crowded, noisy, Manhattan elegant and just great. Service is very good. Markup on wines is extortionate. Recommended!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent food, great decor and service. Greek food with an American twist.
Not a purists Greek restaurant but excellent food. Steak, lamb, fish, octopus, etc. Pricey so be ready for a hefty bill. Overall a great experience.
Be the first to ReplyGood food, noisy, rushed service.
Fresh fares that sometimes use too much sauce.
very noisy with rushed service, not impressed by our waiter.
