Avra Madison Estiatorio New York Reviews from The Last Year
Just ok.
Sadly a restaurant where I often went to a couple of times per week, gave way to not only raising prices, but cutting portion size and quality. The greek salad, is now perhaps half of what it used to be and the vegetables are not fresh. The fish is still good. The cheesecake which used to be sinful, now has supermarket quality. Service was still good.

I came here for a birthday lunch in a group of 8 people on a Saturday around 2pm. They sat us in the top level in a nice booth towards the back of the restaurant which was nice since it made our reunion feel a lot more intimate and quiet. Our server got the drink and food orders for our table promptly when we were ready and all the items came out in a very timely and coordinated manner. My boyfriend and I both opted to get the prix fixe menu for lunch since it comes with 3 courses and is very reasonably priced. There are a wide variety of items to choose from for appetizer, entree, and dessert which seem to accommodate for different dietary restrictions, something I appreciated. For my three courses I tried: - Daily Soup Special: this was a creamy cauliflower soup that was super rich, and comforting. The flavor was vibrant and there was a tangy, sweet punch from the balsamic glaze on top. Presentation was beautiful, I almost didn't want to eat it. Portion size is also incredibly generous. I would recommend asking what their soup special is since they are apparently all equally as good. Perfect for a cold rainy day! - Fish of the Day Special: on this day the special was a branzino filet paired with some couscous. The presentation again was very nice. The fish was flaky, buttery, and so full of flavor. It felt lean, healthy, and fresh. The flavor was delicious and very balanced without any element being too overpowering. The couscous was tomato based so it had a vibrant color, and tangy/acidic flavor, but was over a bed of beets which provided a really nice sweet and refreshing contrast. Very filling and enjoyable! - Strawberry cheesecake: small portion which was great considering how full I was at this point. This was a delicious cheesecake, it had the perfect density with a balance of airy fluffiness that made it feel light but enough substance for it to be satisfying. Not too sweet and the strawberry flavor didn't feel artificial or overpowering. Truly delicious. My boyfriend ordered a different set of things but I did try some of his spanakopita which was very good. The pastry was golden and perfectly crispy. It came with a delicious filling of cheese and greens. Two large spanakopitas per portion which I felt was very very generous. Overall, I had a very positive experience here for a weekend lunch. This is a perfect spot to host a birthday lunch with a big group since the prices are reasonable and the ambiance is super nice/elevated. The food is high quality and the service is also very good. They have a downstairs area as well which is more quiet and is just beautiful. Very spacious, aesthetic, and clean. Their lunch prix fixe is truly an amazing deal. Will definitely come back for another special occasion!
Came to Avra to have dinner with some friends.
Ambiance, service, food and drinks were exquisite.
Always the best Fish!! This restaurant is sooo good.
The ambience is elegant, the servers are eloquent and friendly. The staff is very accommodating and the food is consistently good. It is a nice place for an upbeat dinner and you will often see large parties. The bar is generally full which gives the restaurant a lively vibe.
Space is huge and nicely designed.
Place is always packed. Service great . Fish so fresh Branzino sashimi excellent. My halibut was great even the expresso martini was good as were the wines. I usually get nose bleeds when I travel north of 23rd st but this joint was worth the trip.

The waitress discussed the food portion and time needed for each courses. The oysters were sweet and the sources brought more flavor. I like the rocket fish the best, the fish was grilled with colas and wood smell with marinated onion mix. Moreover the bread with hummus and olives are nice.

All of the locations are great but the room at A Madison is the stand out. Same great seafood centric menu with an ambience that satisfies just about every diner.

Avra has 4 other locations, one being in Beverly Hills and one in Miami; we came to check out this Mediterranean restaurant for lunch, in which they offer a 3-course prix-fixe menu. For the 1st course, I went for the Fish Souvlaki, which were two grilled skewered Chilean sea bass; the bass was flaky. For the main, I went for the Lobster Pasta, which was prepared with light tomatoes, garlic sauce, and linguine; didn't expect to see the actual crustacean there, but the lobster itself was actually super tough and seemed to have been overcooked. For dessert, I went for the Orange Cake; this was a good way to finish what was an uneventful meal. We did order some extra a la carte items, such as a few orders of the Chicken Sausages, French Toast (cinnamon crunch, berries, and cream cheese frosting), the Cheese Burger (grilled sirloin beef, aged cheddar cheese, and oregano fries), and the Fluffy Pancakes (with blueberries and sweet whipped butter). The interior of the restaurant is pretty, with the foliage, the white/off-white booths and tablecloths, as well as the enclosed case of their fresh seafood on display. Service was attentive. +friendly service

I love Avra in LA, used to live there and stop by for a lunch if I'm around in Beverly. So couldn't resist to visit Avra on Madison while visiting NYC. We had a great experience with Vladimir, hands down. Everything was just perfect. The Bronzino was mouthwatering as well as Salmon tartar. Ambience is lovely, service is outstanding.
A nice evening with delicious food and wine
This was our last evening after a week in NY with our kids (3 and 8). Nice atmosphere. Friendly staff. Adjusted food for the kids. Tasty food, large enough portions. We also took the tiger shrimps, nice choice. Good wine also, nice sommelier. Although it is a large venue, you didn’t had the feeling it was overcrowded or too noisy.
Great staff and service.
Fresh fish was amazing and they brought out this dessert Trey that was out of this world..:)
Avra Madison - Average, expensive and overrated
So, I've walked past this restaurant on numerous occasions and always wanted to try it out as it looks very inviting from outside on W60th. But from the start, it was all a bit of a disappointment. We had an early sitting as we had theatre tickets for a show later at 8pm. I had made the reservation over the phone the day before, and not via Resy, so when we arrived no one was able to find my reservation in the system. Nothing had been logged. So, that was annoying to start with. After a while of people checking, we were promptly seated right by the bar, which is also annoying as it's a constant walk-through with people coming and going. I was super disappointed to see a huge TV screen playing football - who wants this, in what is meant to be a high-end sea food restaurant? Go to a sports bar if you want football. I asked to move tables and this was agreed by the staff, (however, it clearly was a problem for them even though the restaurant was far from full ) but at one point, there were 6 members of staff all crowded behind the check-in counter, some doing nothing and playing with their hair, others just talking and standing around, some looking lost and without a job to do. And suddenly there was huge influx of other diners resulting in a big bottleneck. The restaurant manager needs to sharpen up on the arrival of diners and managing the seating arrangements. We then sat and it took nearly 10 mins just to be greeted and offered water. Yet, the restaurant was OVERLOADED with wait staff, servers, groups of them laughing and talking together doing nothing - such a bad look in any restaurant. Our own server was nice enough when he came to our table, but nothing was truly personal, it was more just transactional. The food was just ok in the end. It's way overpriced as other diners have noted, and the price of fresh fish from the middle counter where you can choose from is ludicrous. Some at $75 - $150 a pound. Our shrimps which we started with had clearly been frozen prior, as they were rubbery and a bit tough. Portions were small too and actually nothing one couldn't struggle preparing at home. In all, it was an overrated dinner for sure, the interior is nice but there's much better and way more affordable elsewhere. Go to Kiki's on Division in Chinatown for a more fun, authentic and not as absurdly expensive Greek-inspired experience.
A real gem
Excellent spot. Just steps away from Central Park, stylish, tasty food and splendid service. Everything you might ask for and a little more
Fresh Fish!
Hubby and I came to this restaurant with our friends. Our friends wanted to celebrate our birthdays, so here we were. We had a booth table. It's a gorgeous restaurant with beautiful Greek-style decorations, which are covered by creamy colors all around it. Nice! Well, almost all the fancy Greek restaurants we went to used the same cream color in the background. We ordered Greek salad to start, and our friends had Tuna tartar. Greek salad was authentic. Great tomato, and all other ingredients were crunchy except, of course, Feta cheese. The pepper, onions, tomato, and cucumber were crunchy, so we know they're young and fresh! For the entree, I had branzino! Why not! It's a Greek restaurant. They prepare fish the best! Btw, I chose the fish with head and tail on. Fresh and without a fishy smell, that's the fish I like! Hubby had Prime NY Steak. It was tempting to try it, but my fish was more nourishing than the steak lol. We also ordered grilled vegetables with the entrees. After spoiling ourselves with the meals, we had the nerve to order Baklava. That's not all. It came with a scoop of ice cream too! Now I want to know whose idea to bring us baklava ala mode when you know very well I don't eat dessert? I don't eat, I don't chew dessert. I swallow the dessert! We had a great dinner and were very thankful for our birthday dinners from our friends. I made the right choice. The restaurant became crowded fast, even though we went on a Sunday night. Service was top-notch. Thanks!
Glitzy and people watching establishment
Large choice of fish cooked the Greek way. The space is very large and always crowded. Lots of people watching and be prepared for a lot of noise and a very pricey menu. Outside is a little calmer if you want less excitement. Waiters are polite and service is very good but some of the fish dishes can become very expensive as they are based on weight. Deserts are typically Greek so be prepared. This is a place to bring visitors to NYC to watch the hubbub ...... but the bill can be very high so be prepared
Loved it but waiters a bit over zealous!
Great atmosphere and food was fantastic. Will def go back. Service was great. Only slight niggle was that they were trying to turn the tables too quickly, so waiters were rushing us a bit … but on the whole excellent. Great fish
Perfectly wonderful
Really enjoyed Avra 48th near Lexington in NYC. Had a wonderful lunch and enjoyed so much, we went the next day. Even better with our cordial, professional and interesting server, Kostantinos. Our choice were branzino, octopus carpaccio, dorado. Prices were 36.50 prix fixe. Very reasonable and great value.
