Coquine Portland Reviews from The Last Year
Amazing food
Amazing food, quaint and inviting location, and overall one of our best dinners while traveling ever! We had the special Valentine's Day menu and it did not disappoint!
Everything from the food to the service needs an upgrade.
How they became so popular, I'll never know.
We spent the evening at Coquine.
It was my birthday and it was special. First off the staff is knowledgeable, warm and efficient. Things moved along smoothly. We had ordered a special salad, Crispy Mushroom rice, so tasty. Then because the first salad was so impeccably flavored we ordered another kind and that was superb as well. Then came the roasted half chicken. We ended with 2 desserts that were equally perfect. I can't even describe all the seasonal flavors used. The setting is lit with candles; small and intimate. Will definitely return to this sweet spot.

Atmosphere, check! Knowledgeable and friendly staff, check! Local and quality ingredients, check! Taste, check! Presentation, check! This restaurant was the perfect place to spend my first Valentine's Day as a married couple with my husband. The food was decadent yet light enough for me (a grazer, not a big meal person) to eat every bite. Pricey but for good reason. If you can afford the splurge, it's a great place for special occasions, even if that special occasion is treating yourself to an experience that makes you feel like royalty. I have now realized that I *DO* like gnocchi and I'm going to work on my sauce game in my kitchen because I've clearly not been doing it well enough. That tetsukabuto squash and especially the sauce will last in my memory forever.

Four of us ate there last weekend and had an extraordinary experience! The service from start to finish was wonderful. There when you needed, not when you didn't want it. We all had the tasting menu and were served superb dish after dish with interesting taste combinations and great presentation. Our server was very knowledgeable and helped with two bottles of wine which complemented the dishes. Both were wines we had never tried before. It's a very small restaurant. The ambiance was home -- but not too homey. Yes, it was expensive but I felt it was a value given the overall experience. Less than half what The French Laundry costs and very close to the dining experience!
The two stars are for the cookies.
It's hit or miss whether I can get bread as I've only been able to get the focaccia once and baguettes twice. What really irks me though is how surly, morose and downright rude the staff are. Never a smile, or a welcome, or a greeting. I'm an efficient orderer and always friendly. Today, my have a happy New Year was met by a blank stare. This review is solely for the market. FWIW- I work in the service industry too.
Wish I could rate lower.
I was trying to send a gift card for my daughter and her husband to have dinner. She was excited to try it. Problem ordering online and while speaking with someone at the restaurant (he tried walking me through it on the phone) I told him I was looking to buy over the phone and if he couldn't do that I would have to go somewhere else. Instead of saying no we don't do that he......HUNG UP ON ME! Wow great customer service
If you've read my review about Kann, this is a similar
If you've read my review about Kann, this is a similar experience except on a much smaller but mind blowing coffee and pastry scale Located in a quiet neighborhood near Mt Tabor, Coquine feels like a small nook of Europe. As you walk in, you'll see a small selection of veggies, wines, hard to find chocolates to the left and an incredible selection of freshly made pastries (chocolate bread situation, cardamom monkey bread, I may have blacked out on all other options) and coffee to the right. They have thought through everything here, from quality coffee and snacks, to beautiful ceramics the coffee is served in. Two things I'll call out is I really wanted to try one of their sandwiches but they only had ham, no vegetarian options. And the other thing with all its amazingness this place is amazingly expensive. Totally worth it of course.
Great staff and great food! We asked for some wine
Great staff and great food! We asked for some wine recommendations and were very pleased with our options. Loved the cookies to go option- and wasn't forgotten! Deidre was delightful as a waitress. Thoughtfully prepared but felt like a home cooked meal. Seasonal menu options too!
This review is solely based on Coquine Market Café.
It was a Friday morning, I entered the café with the barista staring at me and did not say a word. I walked towards the ordering counter and looked at the display case of pastries. I did notice quite an amount of fruit flies flying around in the case. Before placing my order, I wasn't greeted or acknowledged at all. Instead the three workers were talking among themselves. I purchased three of the Coquine famous cookies and a Morning Bun. The cookies and the morning bun was phenomenal. Incredibly delicious and would definitely recommend it. They should find a method to abate the fruit flies. Customer service on the other hand was subpar. There was definitely a lack of attentiveness and friendliness. There is a small parking lot next to the restaurant and street parking.
Market review: I love walking up to tabor for this market.
I just want to leave a note for the owner/staff. The pastry case has fruit flies all over pastries. At home I use a bowl of vinegar/honey/water/soap and was able to control them. I don't want to buy pastries teeming with flies.
