Hillstone Restaurant Houston Reviews from The Last Year

Hostess, Managers, JUST PLAIN RUDE! I'll never go back or recommend this restaurant. Certainly not a warm welcome feeling from beginning to end. Other guests were making similar comments as servers were trying to rescue their customer's experience.

The restaurant was very loud, so loud it's probably hard to have a conversation on the phone. Which makes you wonder why they have a no cell phone policy. We ordered a Caesar salad ($16) and it had 5 pieces of lettuce. It was the smallest salad we have ever seen! both of us literally laugh out loud when it arrived. The rest of the meal tasted like Denny's. Never again!

The "manager" Hannah was completely rude to us while dining at Hillside. We ate lunch at Hillside with a group of friends. My daughter received a Facetime call from her son. The waitress told her that Facetime calls or videos were against their policy. Understandable. My daughter was off the phone and a few minutes later someone brought a card to our table with the policy. We asked why she brought the policy when the phone call ended and the waitress had already spoken to us about the policy. Hannah then came over and said she had been timing the call and that it lasted 5 minutes. I told her my grandson is special needs so he was checking in. Hannah said, "So you're going to pull that card." The waitress was not friendly and Hannah was completely out of line. She clearly needs to work in another line of work other than customer service. We will NEVER go to Hillside again. There are too many restaurants in Houston to choose from where you get exceptional food and exceptional service. Hillside needs to get rid of its toxic help.

The drinks selection is diverse, and the side dishes are well executed, making the dining experience more colorful.
I was disappointed in our recent visit.
They have revised the prime rib sandwich-it's now very thinly shaved beef. Take away the cup of au jus and the taste is like Jersey Mikes -except at 2-3 times the cost. It seems as if the restaurant has cheapened or cut back on ingredients to save money. Similarly, The grilled chicken salad had thinly shaved chicken slices-I had to look hard to find them in the salad. I would expect a restaurant with this ambiance and dress code to serve whole grilled chicken breast slices on top of the salad as other restaurants of lesser price do. Grill the breast, cut thick slices, put on salad--simple. Service is excellent-friendly but not obtrusive. Just wish they would upgrade some of the food.
Please do yourself a favor and go elsewhere
I am usual at Hillstone for casual dinner few times per month. Yesterday I had encounter lady at the front ( which at first look like may be a hostess ) was quite rude about my attire. I wore sleeveless blouse and she immediately said if I can go to my vehicle and put a jacket over. I politely replied that it is 90`F outside and I do not have a jacket on hot Houston`s evening. She was unapologetic and told me I look too casual to dine in. Again, it s not a new spot for me to visit and I was dressed to the occasion. We drove to Galleria and had nice dinner at more sophisticated restaurant with no issues. It is sad we had to move on from one of our beloved places ( food and waiters staff are amazing) due person who is not ready to work in hospitality and have big ego or whatever her issue is with guests.
Love love love.
I always get the baby back ribs and it is amazing. Probably more for a adult restaurant but love taking my kiddos there.

Food, outstanding!!!! Ambiance, fabulous!!!! Service, not up to Hillstone's standard!! I've been coming here since 1990, this is the restaurant that I measure all others against, and they fell far from the mark. The wait staff was annoying, they repeatedly grabbed at plates without asking, they hovered around our table, and I was left feeling uncomfortable, I couldn't relax. I blame the management, lack of proper training. I'll wait a while before coming back.....
Great uptown dinner location.
Great evening dinner. Old Fashioneds were awesome. Shrimp Cocktail very good. Service very good. All was as expected of the old Houston’s.
best french dip in the city!! love the grilled artichokes

The food is Always good - in general I usually have the house-made veggie burger with their skinny french fries. The spicy mayo is an excellent dipping sauce. The service is always on top of the top I think this restaurant has the most professional, high-class and friendly staff of most places we eat. Ambiance is nice, low lighting, table candles, soft music and you can ways see the sports games of the day on the tv screens in the bar area. The kitchen. Is open so you can see the cook staff working. It's really nice on Sunday afternoons which is when we typically eat here.

I have been going to this restaurant for over 15 years- often as many times a 3 per week. always had good experience and the food was consistently good. After Covid, they did not really get back to the preCovid level but We were able to find things to eat that we liked and service was pretty good still. They never brought back some of the favorites and I always found it hard to believe that with no prime rib their french dip was still somehow freshly made daily (had to quit ordering it because it became disgusting). Ribs could be great one day and inedible the next. This past year, we consistently had issues with servers, poor bartenders, hostesses with real attitudes as described in other posts here and the food. Final straw for us was the change to the kale salad and the explanation . The kale salad there is probably one of my favorite salads on the planet. In early December 2023, we were there for dinner and started with Kale salads. They are completely different, mostly cabbage now and the whole taste is off because of that. I asked the server and she asked the" chef" . she told us that he said( and this is a direct quote) they "raised the price of the salad so they had to bulk it up and therefore have added a lot more cabbage" we didn't eat the salads, they didnt apologize or offer a different salad. I have brought this to the attention of two managers ( including the restaurant manager) and they both have literally have ignored me. I have heard that their chef left and we did not see the normal chef the last few times we were there. I am done going to houstons/hillstones. I had an issue during covid and stopped going for a while, but they called and asked us to come back. Most people I know never went back after a few terrible experiences after Covid. Ill learn a copycat kale salad and my husband makes salmon and strip better than they do anyway.(those are about the only things left on the menu these days with all their cuts and modifications).
Do not waste your money and time here
Managers are rude and will laugh and roll their eyes in your face then ask you to leave for no good reason . Ive work in a couple of fine dining places in my life and this place is trash .
Disappointing Experience
Disappointing Experience I recently visited Hillstone with my family for a special occasion, and unfortunately, our experience was far from satisfactory. The situation arose when the manager and hostess approached our table, insisting we vacate the booth due to their seating policy. I was taken aback by the aggressive tone used, especially since it was our first time at the restaurant. We were never informed about a limit on the number of people allowed in the booth. Despite being nearly finished with our meals, the General Manager SCHAUNA PORTER abruptly took my plate away, creating an embarrassing and disrespectful moment during what was supposed to be a family reunion. The lack of communication was disappointing. I believe situations like these should be approached with more sensitivity and consideration, especially when it involves customers who are celebrating special occasions. I hope the management takes this feedback constructively to improve their service and prevent similar incidents in the future. Unfortunately, this experience has left a lasting negative impression, and I won't be returning to Hillstone.
Very mean the managger
The manager was very rude and mean to us and they kick us out of the restaurant. We do not recomend this Hilston even though other Hilstons are great.
Watch your party’s size!!
If you are more than 5 people party, just forget about this restaurant because you’ll get a very rude treatment even though there’re booths that can easily sit 7 people. It’s sad how they enjoy rejecting a party of 6 customers, with a sarcastic smile!!
Can’t order what’s on the menu without calling in prior to your visit.
I have always loved this restaurant, Celebrated plenty of birthdays here however, the last two times I have been there for dinner to have the ribs they have run out. The manager Jennifer actually told us that if we wanted to order the ribs that it would be a good idea to make a reservation and request the ribs in advance because apparently someone doesn’t know how to order enough for the day because they run out every night. But, when they were out of the ribs at 8:30 pm my daughter ordered the chicken sandwich well unfortunately they ran out of that as well. The second time we ordered the ribs and they were out she ordered a burger instead and requested that everything be put on the side but, it all came in the burger and they had to remake it. Very unfortunate! I will no longer go to this restaurant. Two bad experiences is enough for me.
Always consistent, service has IMPROVED!
Good is ALWAYS consistent! This time of Course we had the spinach and artichoke dip. Often imitated, NEVER duplicated! We tried the redfish with rock shrimp This time. Did not disappoint! Fish cooked on point , flaky and wonderful. The Rock shrimp , fried had a nice spicy Cajun kick to it. Couscous was wonderful fresh and always handmade like Everything Hillstone does best . Service has GREATLY improved at this location. Ask For China or Darrin, Jenn is at the front. BRAVO TEAM KIRBY HOUSTON!!!
No Phone Orders! No Customer Service!!
I live across the street from this restaurant. We have eaten there many times, however when I wanted to place an order to go by phone I was told that they don't take phone orders and that I would have to go there to place the order and wait for it. Upon arriving at the restaurant I was told that most of the items in my order were not available for takeout because of quality control reasons. When I explained to the manager that I lived across the street I was told that this is restaurant policy. I promptly place an order at Mia's Table which was more than happy to accommodate me. It is a pity that this restaurant does not believe in customer service. We will not be dining here again!!
