Mr. Wong Sydney Reviews
The first thing I will say is that if you're serious about
The first thing I will say is that if you're serious about dining at Mr. Wong, make certain that you have reservations. It is very popular, but for very good reasons. The service was impeccable, the food simply delicious, and the atmosphere that of a popular restaurant with very supportive patrons. One might say that the noise level was medium or greater, but it's simply because the dining patrons were busy conversing with one another, rather than staring at their cell phones. I would definitely return to this wonderful restaurant!
NO.1 Asian in Sydney
Amazing food and amazing service. Has always been the best asian cuisine restaurant in sydney. Large variety of dishes and generous portions for the price. Highly recommend!
It’s easily a 5/5 restaurant .
It should be 5/5 . A fabulous experience in every way . Flawless service and beautiful food and decor. It was one of the highlights of our holiday
This place is pretty wild.
It's located down an alleyway and is tucked into a vintage building. It has a 1920s speakeasy vibe and was jam packed when we went shortly after opening. It's authentic and the menu is extensive and a little overwhelming so you need to know your Cantonese dishes. People were polite and efficient.
Unprofessional rushed service, cold mains
Mr Wongs was recommended as a great place to eat in Sydney. Whilst the ambience and vibe were great the service and main course left a lot to be desired. Seated at a table for 3, very small table, unsuitable for three people eating. I hadn’t finished my starter, my family was finished so bowls whisked away, when the main courses were shoved on the table. The duck and pancakes were cold, lacked taste and overall lack lustre and underwhelming. Hot towels brought at same time as main so cold by the time they were used at the end of the meal. When you were trying to eat the service kept filling water glasses even if you were mid eating which was obtrusive. Overall very disappointing. Felt like we were an inconvenience to the waiting staff, slap everything down quick so the table will be free quicker.
Overrated!
My wife and I visited Sydney last week and wanted a nice restaurant to catch up with my colleagues who I hadn’t seen for a while. We got recommended Mr Wong. So, this was the first time I have experience with several dishes of this restaurant. I found that the restaurant is extremely overrated. The food was just like many other Chinese restaurants I have been to, but far too expensive. It was quite crowded where we sat. My back was touching the back of the person at the table behind me. The noise was very uncomfortable for a decent conversation. I do like the look, the setup, and services of the restaurant, but these alone are not enough to convince me to go back. A very expensive place!
Delicious tea.
DELICIOUS dim sum. We did think the sides were portioned WAY too big. We were a party of 3 and got the crab fried rice, 9 dim sum, the prawns, and green beans and we barely ate half of the side dishes which made me feel really wasteful. But the dim sum was divine and the service was delightful! And I could've drank the liquid the prawns came in as a soup it was so tasty! Beautiful environment both upstairs and down.
I recently went to Mr.
Wong. For a family birthday gathering and the food was lovely. Service is absolutely outstanding and you can't complain. The atmosphere is really good. It's a nice place for some Chinese. It's bougie chinese but it's chinese.
First time writing a review after traveling to different
First time writing a review after traveling to different countries to try different food/restaurants. As a solo traveler for the past two years, this is probably the first time I felt so welcomed. From the hostess, waiter, etc. They continued filling my water at appropriate times, and had small conversations (which still allowed me to enjoy my meal) I didn't know what I wanted to eat. So the waiter was able to put together a sampler "fried" plate for me allowing me to try different fried dim sum (which wasn't on the menu). The steam and fried dim sum was the best I ever had coming from someone who eats dim sum religiously. You can tell each one was unique with its taste, texture, and a combination of different substance. The fried rice was ok, but if you had the fried eggplant (omg) that was so good and the sauce elevated the rice. The ambience was a bit loud and dark if you don't like those kind of environments. But I went for the food and definitely would go back. So far best food and experience in Sydney that I tried.
Modern Chinese Food at it's best!
Recommended to us by Sydney locals and we're so glad we went here! Bustly atmosphere with so many great choices on the menu we needed 2 cocktails to decide! The Peking Duck is an absolute must. Modern Chinese food at it's best!
I had a patient recommend Mr.
Wong as a place to eat... holy shit.. greatest recommendation ever! First night we came we just had bar seating with Phoebe... rock star bartender .. 6 stars out of 5.. world class.. gave us solid recommendations.. left happy.. Next/last night in Sydney... got there at opening.. requested her section.. nothing changed .. quality all around was untouchable! Food.. immaculate.. service .. red carpet.. you miss this spot .. that's on you.
Great food but service poor
We didn’t have a booking but were told we could go on a wait list which we did. When we arrived we were shown to a table by the stairs. The place was so dark that we had to get phones out to see the menu. Starters came and were excellent but before the starters were half finished the rice for the main arrived a full fifteen minutes before the accompanying mains so the rice was cold by the time some of the mains arrived. Three out of four mains arrived and when we asked where the fourth one was we got some story about the kitchen being busy. I frankly don’t care about that as I’m a paying customer. Please don’t try to justify your mistake… just put it right. Eventually the rice was replaced and all mains arrived. Food was superb but before aware all dishes don’t come out at once. Just spoiled our experience of this place a bit sadly.
Book ahead - its super popular!
Our last night in Sydney and we wanted to eat somewhere special. Mr Wong did not disappoint. The food was delicious especially the famous duck pancakes. What really impressed me was the feel of the place. The design is amazing - it reminded me of the Long Bar in Raffles, Singapore. A retro vibe with a cocktail bar to match. The waiting staff are immaculately turned out and the service is very good. It was crazy busy even late on a Sunday evening so be sure to book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Standards dropping
We were there on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm. While we did not have a reservation, the restaurant did not appear to be overly busy, and we noted that the food service finished at 3 p.m. anyway. The patrons who came in earlier would be vacating their tables which would have freed up more tables anyway. However, we were placed beside a high-traffic passageway, which would be both uncomfortable and lacking in ambience. When we requested a change of seating, NO effort was made to accommodate us. Instead, we were met with a simple curtsy and shown no courtesy or apology. We chose to leave. We have been to this restaurant multiple times and the standard is has declined markedly. The signs are there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent food and knowledgeable waiters. Very authentic building. They cook 100 ducks per day - we had Peking duck!
We really enjoyed the authenticity of the venue and were mesmerised by the atmosphere, kitchen activity and quality of the food.
This is one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney.
Based on my research online and when asking a couple friends, everyone was raving about Mr. Wong, so we made reservations about 1.5 months in advance to secure a spot! Each reservation guarantees two hours and we made ours for 2:00P. Their lunch hour ends at 3:00P and the restaurant closes for a couple hours before dinner. When we arrived, it was completely packed, but started clearing out after 40 minutes, so for the second half of the reservation, we didn't have any other customers around us and could enjoy our meal in a quieter environment. The prices here are on the steeper end for Chinese and dim sum dishes, but the options are very diverse and unique. I'd consider their dim sum items elevated and with many that I've never seen anywhere else. + JADE DUMPLING, PRAWN & CHIVES w/ KING CRAB (A$24): The large snappy prawn in each dumpling was the focus, especially being encased within an ultra-thin wrapper. I didn't notice more than just a pinch of crab, so that was a little disappointing. If not for the menu, I probably wouldn't have even known there was crab in there. + PAN FRIED SICHUAN STYLE LAMB DUMPLING (A$24): Exactly how it sounds, the filling of this crispy fried dumpling consisted of shredded lamb with some spice. It was pretty gamey, but also bold, and any fans of lamb will enjoy it. + CRISPY BEAN CURD ROLL w/ WILD MUSHROOMS (A$21): These were so good, we ordered a second plate! Similar to an egg roll, crispy bean curd sheets were filled with a mix of wild mushrooms and shredded carrots. The rolls were served on top of a hoisin-like sauce that was both savory and sweet. This is a must! + ROAST DUCK & CHIVE DUMPLING (A$22): The chives were pretty potent but I could still taste the five spice of the tender duck. The meat was lean and surprisingly didn't contain any fat or gristle. I enjoyed how unique these were and could have eaten another order of them. + BBQ PORK RICE ROLL (A$24): The rice roll was silky and had a good portion of chopped BBQ pork. We also ordered two items from the regular menu. + TWICE COOKED GREEN BEANS (A$34): A solid vegetable dish! The beans were cooked nicely and still had a crunch. There was a generous amount of minced pork and the XO sauce had a mild enticing spice. + HONG KONG STYLE RICE NOODLES (A$42): This is their version of a beef chow fun. The noodles had a delicious char flavor and based on how tender the beef was, I could tell it was great quality. Bean sprouts and chives added some crunch and the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce. Service way surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so friendly, had a great sense of humor and went above and beyond by changing out our plates three times during the meal. Additionally, most of the dim sum items include only three or four pieces, so for the ones that only included three, he suggested just adding one additional piece to the order (at the price of an extra piece), so that we didn't have to get two orders of all of them. 4.75 stars.
The Maitre D was passive aggressive.
She was unable to communicate clearly the waiting time when we arrived 1.5 hr earlier. She continued to stall us only to seat us 1 minute before 8:30 even though at least three table of two folks.
I was enjoying a killer meal.

Best Chinese food I have ever had.
The dumplings were incredible as was the beef singapore and clear noodles.

You clearly come here for the vibe, which is split between restaurant-classic wine bar/massive old industrial basement, and is well worth a stop, at least if someone else is paying. They have an impressive rack of roast duck that is quickly emptied on the ground floor as dinner gets rolling, and they handled our large group well. Fried rice was more on the fusion side but still tasty, the har gow appetizer was clearly a fancy variety assortment, and the veggies we had (a mix of gai lan and snow peas) were all delicious. That said the vibe is clearly fancy/business dinner type, so keep that in mind if you're expecting something more casual. And definitely make a reservation.
Never again.
Expensive for what we got.The place was very dark ,very poor lighting.Staff were poor too not very experienced at serving in a restaurant.
Never Disappointed
Never disappoints. We make this a regular visit each year. Love the food and rustic l;ook of the place. An upper class chinese restaurant...

Mr. Wong's Chinese restaurant in Sydney, Australia, offers a wide range of delicious dishes. Highlights include: - Dim Sum, Peking Duck, eggplant Stir-fry, crab fried rice, and their short rib. The restaurant has a stylish and vibrant atmosphere, making it a great spot for both casual dining and special occasions.
Ridiculous
Food was amazing but will never book again because of 48 hour $100 per head if cancelled …. Anything can happen in day of life … and it’s not as if the restaurant would suffer from us needing to cancel 24 hours before .
Amazing!
Wow- what an outstanding experience. Beautiful, fun ambiance. Wide variety on menu, great wine list, and excellent quality. Many great dishes for sharing. Duck pancakes were outstanding, as well as all of the spicier fish and chicken dishes. Highly recommend this spot in Sydney!

Good food, service and ambience at Mr Wong
The ambience was great and so the food. Service was good despite them being at capacity. We did not feel being rushed or hurried out. It is best to make advance reservation.
Westernised unfortunately- good atmosphere, beautiful building & staff
Did not live up to expectations, disappointed. Expensive Cantonese food Ordered the banquet / been here b4 was hoping they upped their game… Unfortunately westernised (flavours were lacking) not real Chinese food 😔 Didn’t live up to the hype Great atmosphere and company Staff were great 👍🏻 Can’t recommend to go again (for the food) The bathrooms were horrible for a high class restaurant (smelt & water in the floor) maybe bc it’s near all the hanging raw duck 🦆 idk
Great place good food great team lovely wing .

Disappointing
I had been highly recommended this restaurant by friends. I must have caught it on a bad night, the quality of food just wasn’t very good in my opinion. Service was very good however, despite how busy the restaurant was (which is a good sign). Good drinks selection.
An amazing experience!!!!
A memorable experience! We were lucky to get a last minute seat at the bar. This place is hopping no matter where you sit…and the food was amazing. The staff was amazing! Isabel and Julie were standouts but meeting Carmen, the hostess with the mostest was the highlight!!!
Fabulous restaurant experience
We are from Melbourne and this was our second visit to Mr Wong. The ambience of the restaurant is fabulous, created in an old Sydney warehouse. The music was spot on, jazz and 50’s R&B at just the right volume. Nothing is more annoying than loud music that doesn’t fit the ambience but Mr Wong gets it right. We had banquet at $112 which isn’t that cheap but we had plenty of food and nearly all of it was delicious. Only the salt and pepper calamari was a little tough but very tasty. Everything else was very good to excellent. Highly recommend the banquet so as to try a variety of dishes. The servers were all very good though the service can be a little chaotic which is probably due to the size of the place and the number of diners. Overall, highly recommend.

Exquisite food with a menu offers great choices, including delicious and healthy sautéed greens. Prices are very reasonable and the meals are complemented by an extensive drink menu. The staff are pleasant and helpful. The staff readily take booking to ensure you're seated. The ambiance is authentically Chinese with a high Chinese clientele.

Great ambience. Waiter very helpful with choice of dishes. Scaled down size of dishes as was solo. Delicious wagyu beef dish with crab fried rice. Selection of Dim sims for entree. Will definitely be back again. Thoroughly recommend.
Weekend lunch
Great lunch had banquet for two Fabulous atmosphere and service Food was delicious , having the banquet gives you the tastes of many dishes
Great lunch
Delicious fresh clean Cantonese dishes. Cool place. French waiter. We had pork belly, seafood with ginger and scallions, a few dumplings and some sautéed green veg. Very nice lunch. Next time I’m in Sydney I’d come back with a group and try more.
A fun, delicious meal
Recommended by our hotel concierge, Mr. Wong is a bustling hot spot in an old warehouse down an alley. It's a Sydney legendary eatery with fabulous food. The menu is massive. Highly recommend the prawn wonton soup, dim sum platter, Peking duck pancakes and stir fried vegetables. It was A LOT of food for just the two of us, but all delicious. Service was prompt and attentive notwithstanding how busy they were.
Don’t miss this gem
What a lovely experience we had at this fun restaurant. The food was amazing… don’t miss the Peking Duck! And fried ice cream desert. But the service is what made it the best. A loud group of standing friends encircled the table next to us and the restaurant staff was very quick to realize how noisy it became and asked them to move away. And then apologized. To us. Our waitress, lily, was so helpful in helping us make our food choices and also selected a great wine. The atmosphere is very interesting too. Highly recommend!

It's kind of hard to find if your new in town, But worth the effort when you get there Definitely worth going again great food and service very nice ambiance as well and exceptionally clean. Love it will definitely go back
There were good vibes.
The food was great. The service was super nice and the people they were super nice there's tons of great food you should get there. And there's also tons of good stuff. You should come a little bit now because they give you tons of specials because it's around Chinese new year.
Third time unlucky
Our third visit to Mr Wong in Sydney. Previously we have loved this restaurant for its great food and chaotic atmosphere. Sadly on our latest visit the only wow factor was the bill. It feels like the prices have jumped 30-40% making it crazy expensive. We had a banquet which was just ok. No more Mr Wong for us
Mr. Good and Mr. Wrong
Service: mixed feelings about this one Food: good Atmosphere: fantastic, we loved it Location: good Price: too expensive for what you get Wifi: unknown A bit of mixed feelings about this place. We arrived without a reservation. The hostess told us she could put us on the list. All that went very smooth. Once we could get a table there was a bit confusion on where we would sit. Then our waiter was a bit pushy with things and had a little attitude. The food was good, but came a bit in haste.
