Must Try for Foodie Adventurers!Using only ingredients found locally before colonialism, Owamni has some of the most unique dishes anywhere. There is no wheat, dairy, chicken, or beef- instead elk, bison, and trout! Also no pop (soda)! Our group of four shared everything except drinks, and I would recommend this so you can truly sample a variety. We started with the white bean spread and smoked trout with corn chips. Similar to hummus, creamy and tasty. The trout was light flaky and smoky not fishy.Next we received the wild rice which was so much lighter and softer that most wild rice I've experienced.Next came the beautifully presented corn cake, which did not taste as much like cornbread as I expected, but was good. It was surrounded by colorful berries and squash preserves. My favorite dish of all was served then: roasted sweet potatoes with scallion and chili oil, which was not too hot for me, but I steered clear of the more peppery pieces. My heat loving friends got into the oil and enjoyed. The main course was bison short ribs which were moist, tender & flavorful. We topped the whole feast off with the "bread pudding" which was not as sweet as you would expect for a dessert.
