🤮 1/5 - Why do they cheat?

Why the upselling "tastings" that are not on the menu and therefore have no price? Why do they bring a bottle of wine for tasting and then disappear away from the table to "decant" it, only never to see the bottle or cork again, and then the decanter never sits on the table? Why do they - when they clearly have good food - go OUT OF THEIR WAY! - to rip you off?
We live local. We initially (starting 6 or so years ago) had good experiences there. Then about 3 years ago things started to change.... Yes, Mauro apologized for the $600 bottle of wine (Jesus says they didn't have the one my husband picked, but he would select one if that's ok, after all - he said - you don't need to spend a lot of money to have good wine right? To the tune of $600. Not sure what he drinks when it's actually an expensive bottle? Are you kidding me?). And when we finally cleared the bad taste out of our mouths 18 months later, Mauro did have a bottle of wine delivered to the table without us saying a word and comped it. I did research the wine later, it retails for $60 - but it's the thought that counts, maybe?? Fine. The next time (what can I say, the food is good and it's 1/2 block away and we are gluttons for punishment, clearly?), we ordered as entrees 1 pasta for myself and the sirloin for my husband. Francesco offered to split the plates so we could "share, like a tasting". Then he shows up with 2 pasta tastings and says nothing until I ask why we have 2 pasta tastings when we only ordered 1 (singular!) pasta dish. He didn't offer to return them and blamed the kitchen. With quite an attitude. Whatever, we've eaten out before(!) and usually kitchen mistakes aren't charged; we didn't make a fuss. But then he brought out 2 sirloin orders, 1 for each of us. Not that we knew it at the time... we thought it was 1 order split on 2 plates. Anywho, they charged us $38 for EACH pasta (my original pasta was $26) and $58 for EACH sirloin. So we went from $81 for 2 entrees as ordered to $192 as charged. Wow. HOW ON EARTH do you have the nerve to over double our order and then charge us? Shameless. I sent Francesco back to adjust the bill twice. He thought he was clever and would remove an item but then up the wine charge so the bottom line was the same. Can't make this stuff up! At some point we just had to leave before it was going to get ugly.
Ultimately it's really sad that Mauro and his crew are resorting to such underhanded and dishonest tactics. OH, one last thing - be careful about wines by the glass!! First they'll tell you they don't sell it, but then they'll offer it if you finish your bottle but don't want a second. So, you won't know what you're getting (because they don't list wines by the glass....), and you'll be mighty surprised by the price. Cheers!!
