🤮 1/5 - Special 60th birthday Gin Tasting and Lunch

We arrived a little cold from the horizontal snow, but the welcome from the young lady present was equally as cold. We were asked three times for our name, and then lead without a hello to a table in the bar, where we were left for about 15-20 minutes.
I know today was April Fools day, but we were beginning to think that it might be a joke.
After sometime, a gentleman in a suit, put a cocktails menu and wine menu on our table, asked if we wanted a drink, I asked for a sparkling water, my friend wanted to look at the menu, and asked him to come back…. He never did so no sparkling water for me!
Eventually the barman brought us some small glasses of tap water to the table.
And finally we were given some nuts and olives, as someone else was having the gin tasting experience ahead of us… we were confused as we were the first people in the restaurant…. So we were then told we could wait a further 10 minutes, or have our lunch. We chose to wait.
Sometime later longer than 10 minutes, the barman who had brought the water over, came to our table with his gin trolley. The gins and his patter were well rehearsed - he was even quite humorous, but the botanicals he gave us to smell, were all old and frankly didn’t smell of anything.. other than dust - even the liquorice which should have been strong smelt of nothing. .
He told us when we were done with the goblets of ice, gin and tonics - and there were three, we should tell him when we were ready for our lunch. We were starving, so shortly afterwards we asked to go to our table - a very pleasant young lady in a green dress escorted us there, and we were presented with the menu, and informed that we - as we were on a voucher, which was a 60th birthday gift from a group of my friends, - were only entitled to the set menu. That was fine, but it would have been nice to have an option to pay for something else if we had wanted it.
So we sat and we sat, having long decided what we were going to chose from the set menu.
We were actually joking that as our booking was only from 12 until 2, they might throw us out!
Eventually we were asked our choices, and again started another long wait. There weren’t that many tables taken in the restaurant, it was far from full, and we began to think that perhaps because we were paying for this by voucher, we were somehow being discriminated against…. But reading other reviews it seems that this is fairly standard.
My friend decided to find the ladies restroom and she was gone a really long time… when she returned, the story added to the Fawlty Towers effect of this event. The ladies toilets were locked, so she went up a floor, to find that these ladies toilets were also locked… in desperation she had to use the gents!
After eating our mains… which were ok she had steak - only being given the choices of medium rare or well done… which was bizarre, I had cod, which at least was nicely cooked, I also decided to find the restrooms.
So I explained to one of the staff, the locked status of both of sets of toilets, he said he would check with the management, then sent me down the length of the dining room saying it was on the left….
I duly followed the instruction, but there was nowhere on the left, only a chef, with two other people, the gentleman of the two….. gave me the nicest greeting we had received…. By asking with a smile, if he could help me, I explained the situation and another gentleman finally pointed me to the facilities….. relief!
I came back to find my friend with the desserts menu, even though it was insisted upon that we ordered our desserts at the very beginning of our order, eventually we handed the menus back to the unpleasant young lady who had not welcomed us when we entered the restaurant, explaining that we had already ordered, but I stopped her dashing off and asked for a tea…. Which came before the desserts….. sigh, at least I could drink it with my dessert.
So we asked for the bill - and once again waited and waited… eventually we got up put our coats on… and only then did we get presented with the bill.
So taking off the voucher we had to pay for a bottle of sparkling water and the tea, but there was a service charge…. this was marked as discretionary… so I asked for it to be removed… the service was at best unacceptable and at worst unpleasant… this was done, but at no point was I asked what the problem was…. Frankly the management didn’t appear to care, but I did highlight that the young lady who omitted to welcome us, or do anything other than abandon us at a table in the bar, was the major cause of my upset.
So message to the management if you care, employ staff, who smile, are welcoming in manner, and even if someone is paying for their meal/event by voucher, consider that this may be a special occasion for them, which it should have been for me.
I don’t like giving negative feedback - but it wasn’t a great experience when it should have been a really fabulous experience.
